Which travel apps help you the most to plan your trip's activities?

by @k08as 7yr  | 5 comments

Hi guys,

As part of the travel preparation routine Iโ€™m always looking for a better and more efficient way to plan my activities & things to be seen/done once I reach the destination and lately Iโ€™ve been using a number of apps like Sygic Travel (ex Tripomatic), Tripsee, & Triphobo (Google Trips yet to be tried), but the main pain is that it takes quite some time to get the whole planning done (especially, if you are aiming to visit a number of cities in a short period of time) + itโ€™s not that simple to adjust the plan while you are on the move. Thatโ€™s not to mention limited possibilities to buy attraction tickets via the app & have all the useful info under your hand all the time.

Iโ€™ve been checking the forum lately and found a couple of related posts (here & here), which also suggested such services like Wikitravel, Wikivoyage, Travelindependent and so on, but whilst being on the go most of the time, I would like to find out which mobile apps help you explore stuff like sightseeing spots, things to do, places to visit, etc & why have you picked them? (skipping TripAdvisor here as Iโ€™m looking for a more intelligent alternative)

Thanks in advance

@lucha54, @amirul: thanks for the insight.

@lucha54: What do you find most/least useful in Triposo? Do you use Create City Walk functionality much based on the places youโ€™ve saved?

@amirul: Do you prefer generated routes based on the places you saved or you just wander around and just have the places of interest being marked on the map?

Google Trips has actually been pretty great for me โ€” itโ€™s nothing comprehensive, but I look at Trips first for an overview of restaurants and landmarks, it works even in smaller destinations (Iโ€™m in Bansko, Bulgaria right now, and there are automatically generated suggestions all the same.)

For bigger cities like Istanbul and London, the suggested day plans and walks are actually pretty great.

This is slightly off topic, but still very relevant. Check out Hopper and Skiplagged whenever you are planning on booking flights. These are awesome applications.

Hopper lets you track the flights you want and uses algorithms to predict whether the prices of flights will increase or decrease over the next X amount of days and gives you suggestions on whether to buy now or in the future.

Skiplagged is the cheapest way to purchase flights. Unlike other flight aggregators, Skiplagged takes into account cheaper flights that land in the city you want as a layover.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Ko Samui, Ko Lanta, Goa or Chennai. Which one to start developing apps?

in Ko Samui , Thailand by @lordcyberspacer 8yr 8 years ago  | 10 comments

Hi nomads!

Iโ€™m intending to become a proper digital nomad in January at the latest, and I am just starting to take some initial steps. I am a software developer and I intend to create an app and build a startup. Which one of these places would be best for that?

  • Ko Samui (Thailand)
  • Ko Lanta (Thailand)
  • Goa (India)
  • Chennai (India)

My idea is to develop my business in any of those places and open it here in Australia later on. Obviously, one of the main reasons why I have picked those places is that they are very affordable so that I can make the most of my savings from my current contract  Goa would probably be my favourite pick since is quieter and not as crowded as Chennai (I think), plus living costs are about half of what they are in Ko Samui and Ko Lanta.

However, due to the nature of my business plan, Internet is a must. I have read your article about Goa and you said that Internet access is pretty bad, however I noticed that you wrote that a year ago and I also heard that this is currently changing. Whatโ€™s the situation right now?

Cheers!

What are some good apps to track income and expenditure for nomads?

by @gareth_pickering 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Hi all, can any recommend a decent iOS (multi device) personal finance app to track income and expenditure, that also supports multi currency when you move or travel to a new country. Someone suggested moneywiz but Iโ€™d like to get some feedback before I spend time and money on something when there might better options out there.

Many thanks
Gareth

Best Macbook Air apps for digital nomads?

by @zosiaswidlicka 8yr 8 years ago  | 8 comments

I just got my first ever Macbook and I am curious to find out which apps you find the most useful when working and travelling. They can be directly related to work (Iโ€™m a writer, mostly), or for travelling, planning, organising or pure fun times.

So far Iโ€™ve got Skype and Chrome, hoping you can inspire me with some more interesting tools!

Cheers

What's better for remote work? Google Apps or Office 365?

by @meanderingwoods 9yr 9 years ago  | 7 comments

Right now Iโ€™m on a Google Apps for Business account for my organization. Itโ€™s the free one from several years ago thatโ€™s grandfathered into free, but has some account restrictions. Iโ€™m about at the point of outgrowing it and am considering either full Google for Work or Office365. Iโ€™ve been over pros and cons and both seem very good at a similar price. So Iโ€™m wondering what experience others have had. Specifically around:

  • Storage and backup, with versioning.
  • Granular file access control and logging.
  • Migration pathway. (Anyone who does IT with experience migrating from G to MS contact me offlist for a potential project.)
  • Considerations for storing client-sensitive information there at some point.
  • Other differentiators or considerations commonly missed.
  • Other services to consider that are similar (email, storage, document collaboration, security, reliability, near-zero IT support requirement)

What are the essential apps for digital nomads?

by @coffeeshopceo 9yr 9 years ago  | 27 comments

There is a constant flood of new apps for perpetual travellers and digital nomads. However over the years, only a handful have become apps that I habitually use and actually benefit my lifestyle.

Which apps are most essential to your daily lifestyle as a digital nomad?

โ€ข Toshl - Personal Finance App for iOS and Android

โ€œMen lie, women lie, numbers donโ€™tโ€. My spending easily gets out of hand. Being able to track and monitor everything I spend helps me realise when I need to reel it in. Living / travelling in a foreign country where weโ€™re alien to the local currency makes it easy to treat cash like Monopoly money.

Over two years I have become seriously anal about using Toshl. I log every single 1baht expenditure.

With Toshl, you input each expenditure (in local currency) and the app will show your total spend each day in a home/familiar currency. I display my expenditure in USD because I earn in dollars.

I would recommend Toshl to every traveller as it enables uniform logging of your expenses and helps easily monitor a budget when youโ€™re spending in multiple foreign currencies. It does take a good month of daily use to develop the habit of using Toshl, but do try!

โ€ข Beanhunter - Locate the best nearby coffee shops

Hello my name is Adam and Iโ€™m a shameless caffeine addict.

When you rock up in a new city, you need somewhere to work from that serves good java. Beanhunter users rate and review local coffee shops. When you open the app in a new city, itโ€™ll geolocate you and provide a list of local rated cafรฉs. This app has served me well on all my trips, but it isnโ€™t very popular outside of big SEA cities yet - itโ€™s mainly an Ozzy / American thing.

Itโ€™s worth downloading even if youโ€™re not a raging coffee fiend. Beanhunter is free to use. If you only use it once every blue moon, finding a highly rated local cafe hidden in a back alley is 100x better than sitting in yet another Starbucks.

โ€ข Slack - Team communication, chat

Iโ€™m sure youโ€™re all familiar with Slack. if youโ€™re not itโ€™s the same platform that NomadChat runs on.

Slack is a relatively new addition to my iDevices. I originally had Skype, which I quickly uninstalled as it was buggy, slow and delayed message sending and receiving.

Slack on the other hand goes balls deep at providing a rock solid chat platform. It works seamlessly across all devices.

We also use Zapier to integrate Basecamp and Helpscout into Slack. Even when staff arenโ€™t chatting we can see one anotherโ€™s key tasks being completed.

Slack can be used 100% free, too. If youโ€™re still using Skype, stop. Seriously.

โ€ข Converter+ - Quickly convert metrics, particularly currency

Converter+ has been in my pocket since I left home. The app quickly and easily allows you to convert length, weight, volume, currency and more.

I use it primarily for currency. The currency rates update each time you open the app (internet required) and you can select your favourite currencies to be displayed each time. If I enter something in baht, itโ€™ll show me the conversion in GBP, USD, PHP, and a bunch of others.

Hereโ€™s a quick screenshot.

โ€ข Other worthy mentions:

  • Basecamp - not the easiest to use on iPhone, but when you simply need to jot down a to-do on an open project itโ€™s ok
  • AirAsia App - At least in and around Thailand AirAsia have a big presence. Iโ€™ve never booked a ticket via the app but I do quickly search for flights.
  • Paypal - Occasionally the need to see recent sales pops up (often CS related). Other than the occasional convenience Iโ€™ve no need for the app personally.
  • Vivino - Unrelated to travel butโ€ฆ Vivino is a wine community app (similar to Beanhunter). Wine in SEA, particularly Thailand, is overpriced and often not very good. When youโ€™re out with friends or on a date, snap a picture of the wine list with the Vivino app and Vivino will point out which wines are best. You look like a boss ordering a great bottle at a good price.
