What's the digital nomad scene like in (Las Palmas de) Gran Canaria

in , Spain by @repat 8yr  | 6 comments

Hi,

so Iโ€™ve heard many great things about the Canary Islands but only from people who are not digital nomads. Iโ€™ve been on Tenerife in February 2011 and 2012, but only as a tourist (and with a student budget living at a friends house, so very different experience) and I saw a lot of old people. People say the same about Gran Canaria, especially in the winter, since a lot of the German and British retirees overwinter there.

Everything I read about especially the biggest city Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is more or less about the city, the food, the beaches, the weather, the nature and so on but less about the people. I know Iโ€™d have to learn Spanish to speak to the locals (and I want to). I want to go somewhere at beginning of next year and LPA is on the top of my list. After my Tenerife experience and everything I read Iโ€™m sure I will like the location itself but itโ€™s never fun if youโ€™re somewhere alone for too long. Maybe the people who live(d) there can share their experiences about the digital nomad scene, or more specifically: How about the international crowd, are there a lot of people from say โ€ฆ mid 20s to mid 30s that are meeting up regularly for leisure (not work/tech related meetups)?

Can anyone suggest a place to go in the Canaries that is quiet with a beach to surf on. Iโ€™m not too keen on large cities, nor large developed coastal areas for second-home retirees.

Suggestions appreciated.

Agaete in Gran Canaria - though youโ€™d have to hop on the bus and go to Moya for the surfing, and maybe Sardinia, which is even closer. (Actually I donโ€™t know much about the surfing other than what I hear other people say - but it does seem like every other person on Gran Canaria surfsโ€ฆ) Agaete is a beautiful little town at the foot of a soaring cliff, with some of the most wonderful hiking, if youโ€™re into that.

I suspect youโ€™re looking for a quiet place with a good surfing beach rather than a place with surfing nearby, so someone else may have a better suggestion. (Iโ€™m quite keen on moving from Las Palmas to Agaete, which is why it comes to mind.)

Weโ€™ve had a wonderful 1.5 months in Las Palmas! Weโ€™ve met many Canarians who speak fluent English, especially in the tech industry. Weโ€™ve met a number of โ€œpartial nomadsโ€ who have their base here most of the year but travel for 3-5 months.

There are lots of cool local companies based here so itโ€™s easy to meet tech people if thatโ€™s your thing. There are interesting things going on all the time organized by locals, expats and nomads. Aside from tech and nomad meetups, Iโ€™ve enjoyed going to language exchanges and meeting people that way. We hope to come back and stay close to Las Canteras beach again!

I met a nomad last year who is awesome and has made Las Palmas his base for a few years. He really likes it and has said good things about the community. As @ani says, there are lots of coworking spaces and meetup groups there. Keep in mind itโ€™s one is one of Spainโ€™s largest cities, not just some small island town! I expect there are many local people who speak great English as youโ€™ll find across the country. My husband and I (30s) are very likely to head there in November.

Thanks for sharing your experiences

@ani I just said 20s-30s because thatโ€™s my age group and we tend to have similar backgrounds and interests but I donโ€™t really care about the age. Youโ€™re right, itโ€™s about not becoming old while still young, or at any age for that matter

In some nomad โ€œhot spotsโ€ like Chiang Mai or Berlin Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s possible to find lots of likeminded people, I just wasnโ€™t so sure about LPA.

@lognaturel, 400k inhabitants is indeed a bigger city but doesnโ€™t really say much about the (international) communities e.g. in coworking spaces/meetups and what theyโ€™re up to. E.g. Iโ€™ve found that in Berlin nearly all (tech-) meetups are in English whereas in other German cities like Hamburg they are in German. I also donโ€™t have a problem just hangig out with locals though, but Iโ€™ve heard from many many places (podcasts, blogs, my own experiences on mainland Spain) that if you want to stay there a little longer you should/have to learn spanish because a lot of the locals speak only little English, apart from the touristic places, where you could get by with English or even German

Iโ€™m back in Las Palmas for the second time (I was first here from November 2015 to April 2016) and I can say that Las Palmas is very different to the south of the island, where pensioners really do seem to predominate. Las Palmas, on the other hand, tends to be very youthful (note that I understand โ€˜youthfulโ€™ to mean โ€˜not retiredโ€™, and I include myself (50 y.o.) in this youthful group - some people do allow themselves to become old while still young, but this isnโ€™t very common among nomadsโ€ฆ). Not only is Las Palmas youthful, itโ€™s the most sociable place Iโ€™ve lived so far. Yesterday evening I was at a language exchange - a very sociable gathering but also with a purpose, obviously. My co-working office organises social events. There are loads of social events organised through Las Palmasโ€™s active network of meetup groups. There are also lots of social activities publicised on Facebook. If you like hiking, there are senderismo groups you might want to join/follow, and there are plenty of other Facebook pages with information about other types of events. Iโ€™m unaware of events strictly for the young, though - I find Las Palmas refreshingly non-ageist!

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

How to find accomodation in Las Palmas, Canary Islands

in , Spain by @philippg 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi, we are trying to find a house to rent for 2-3 persons near Las Palmas for 4-5 months at the moment and it seems to be almost impossible except through Airbnb which is super expensive. Any advises or local contacts?

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

How to get into the digital nomad lifestyle?

in Switzerland by @filiptk 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is โ€“ how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

What's the best thing to do with your phone/ your phone number when travelling?

in Poland by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey, hope everyone is well!

We're leaving in a month to go travelling. Our first destination is still to be confirmed, but will likely be Poland or Slovakia. We will be moving around every month or two to different destinations.

The question we have is: what do people do with phones/ phone numbers when hopping from country to country? Ideally we'd just like one number for the whole trip (even better, the number we already have) wherever we go, rather than getting new SIMs with different numbers.

This is just so it's easier to keep in contact with family/ clients/ etc.

Any Ph.D students dissertating while a digital nomad?

by @larsheather 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

Anyone know of any groups or resources for Ph.D. students working on dissertation while living as a digital nomad? I know there are several virtual writing groups around, but wondered if there were any specifically for digital nomads, particularly those who are dissertating.

Thanks!

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 4yr 4 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

How do you invest internationally as a nomad?

by @mateuszwieloch 4yr 4 years ago  | 17 comments

I have finally saved enough money to start investing. What company gives good, diversified access to stock, ETFs and mutual funds? Does it make sense to use company like Vanguard or Fidelity for that? Iโ€™m a EU/Poland citizen, how would I transfer my money back and forth without incurring significant fees?

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 4yr 4 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!
