What kinds of plans are other British nomads considering in wake of the EU referendum?

by @ani_goes_tweet 8yr  | 19 comments

To put it mildly, Iโ€™m very disappointed by the prospect of losing my EU passport as a result of the referendum on 23 June.

There may be some UK nomads who do not mind and will be content with their British passport, but for others like me who possibly value their EU citizenship more than their British citizenship, what alternatives are you considering?

Weโ€™ve got at least two years yet so I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s any need to panic right now, but Iโ€™m terrified of whatโ€™s happening already.

Theresa May wants entry to the single market while cutting off free movement. Merkel says weโ€™ll only get free trade if we give free movement. EU have also said no negotiations will happen until weโ€™ve left. Which is at least two years away, as we havenโ€™t triggered Article 50 yet.

The only thing we can be certain of right now is uncertainty.

Estonian e-Residency does not help you in physical movement but when it comes to passporting then it is all there - EU business entity, bank account, EU regulations, EU accepted digital signatures, fintech services etc. There is a separate AMA about e-Residency also in this forum.

In regards of the ยฃ: I donโ€™t expect it going up to where it was before. Which is said as I am making some money in GBPโ€ฆ
But itโ€™s good if you stay in the UK and earn money from overseasโ€ฆ
I do see a chance for of the Pound having another slide down if politicians making (more huge) mistakes.
So maybe not hold your hard earn money in Sterling. But I am far from being an expert on that.
More diversifying is my strategy after Brexit.

Iโ€™m not sure if this helps (Iโ€™m an Aussie, not a Brit) but Germany offers permanent residency after 33 months (~3 years) via the EU Blue Card program, and you can shorten that to just 21 months (~2 years) if you can prove B1 level language skills in German. Also, after 18 months you earn the right to move to any other EU country:

http://www.bluecard-eu.de/eu-blue-card-germany/

The catch is, I imagine that British folks canโ€™t apply as youโ€™re currently still part of the EU - maybe a post Brexit option.

I think, as UK citizen, you have a โ€œgoodโ€ passport. And nothing not set in stone yet.
Planning would depend on how long you stay in a country. If itโ€™s just for a few weeks-month, you are usually good with a visa-free entry (usually 90 days) - why should the EU not allow that for Brits if itโ€™s ok for most 1st world countries?
If you want to stay 3-6 month, a visa run might do (like in Bali every 2 months).
If you want to stay longer, than it might become more difficult IF the UK would not be part of the open market (free movement).

I suspect that free movement will persist, but there is uncertainty so Iโ€™m making some plans.

Iโ€™m looking at relocating to Spain, moving business operations there, get Autonomo status and pay for healthcare in Spain. I suspect 4-6 years before split from EU and entering some kind of EEA relationship, so by living in Spain for 4-6 years I will be in a better position to claim residency of some kind if/when it is required.

I hope the GBP rebounds and if not I might start charging in EUR.

Far from ideal.

Ani, i am sorry but your allegations about the consequences of the Brexit are bogus.

UK is not part of the Schengen space. It means that as soon as you live UK to go to France you have to show your passport.
all treaties of free circulation did exist before EU existed. Meaning that before EU, you didnโ€™t need a visa to visit France, Germany, Belgiumโ€ฆ
In other words, nothing will change.
There is nothing as a EU citizenship. EU is not tangible. It is just a useless administration.

Iโ€™m quite offended by your using negative language (โ€˜bogusโ€™) and framing (โ€˜allegationsโ€™), but putting that aside, this isnโ€™t a matter of merely showing a passport. Britain leaving the EU means that it will unquestionably be far more difficult to live in the countries of the EU. This is less relevant to nomads who just pass through countries - for my part, I am a nomad who likes to stay for a long time, because culture and language and getting to know people matter a lot to me.

Already, two weeks after the referendum, itโ€™s more difficult being here. My pound has shrunk, costs have gone up. I can only hope that somehow the UK manages to convince the worldโ€™s financial markets that itโ€™s stable and will resume growth, or else Iโ€™m going to have to find a way to get paid in Euros.

Passport inconveniences do enter into the equation but only marginally - every journey now will involve longer passport queues as we will no longer get to go through the EU fast lane - as Iโ€™ve said, this is only a marginal consideration, although itโ€™s very annoying. (I suppose there are some people who donโ€™t realise that the UK is not a party to the Schengen treaty, but I can assure you Iโ€™m not one of them, and I imagine that few nomads areโ€ฆ)

I am avoiding the political aspects of the referendum, of course, as this is not a political forum. I have initiated this thread as nomads from the UK are already being affected by the fallout from the referendum.

You canโ€™t do anything against the vote of people. Thatโ€™s British people choice, you canโ€™t do anything against peopleโ€™s choice. Here is what i wanted to say. GB is not part of the Schengen space, GB does not have the Euro. GB has different banking regulations than others. Consequently ties between Germany, France, Italy, Spain for instance are stronger than with GB. If you feel more European and if you donโ€™t accept the political choices of your peers it is time to move to the European Union.

I am French, and the only thing i can suggest for you would be the following:

If you want to become french passport, it takes 5 years of fiscal residency. I suggest you to live close to an airport where Ryanair or Easyjet operate to have direct flight to UK. They are plenty in France. I do recommend south west of France or South east of France. Rents are not that high and then you can have a utility bill to justify your fiscal residency. Then there is the status of micro entreprise for one person business.

Use the service paywithfire which provide an account in Sterling and in Euro. You can open a bank account in Euro in some places as a non resident just like in Cyprus, Latvia

Now if you want a simulation of income tax in France:
http://www3.finances.gouv.fr/calcul_impot/2016/simplifie/index.htm

Open this chrome, it will translate automatically. and it will tell you how much you could pay income tax in France.

I live in Nouvelle Aquitaine, where lots of British nomads have settled. They all have their account and their saving in Euro. They have invested in houses. By the way, Spain is not cheaper than my region.
The clever British people already have done the move.

Me too. I been through my family tree with a fine-tooth comb trying to find an Irish connection. Sadly no luck!

My research has so far drawn a blank on anywhere that would allow you to become a citizen with a right to a passport without some significant period of residence, which is fair enough I guess. But kind of rules out that option for most nomads.

I have thought about relocating my permanent residence to Scotland if it looks like they will seek independence and membership of the EU in their own right.

This is what Iโ€™m finding as well. Scotland looks like the only option, and even that is contingent upon Scotland managing to remain in the EU. Evidently Belgium had a two-year (I think) residency requirement, but itโ€™s been changed to five years (although I would freeze to death even if I had to stay there for two years).

There seems to be a lot of talk (if only talk at this point) about allowing UK students in, say, Germany to gain German citizenship, for instance, but other Remainers are being neglected even at this stage of informal discussion. This worries me.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

by @al_steffen 4yr 4 years ago  | 59 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (itโ€™s ok if itโ€™s not accepted in the US as Iโ€™m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. Anyone got a good experience or a recommendation?

Thanks in advance!

How to ship bikes from US to Europe?

by @ld 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello,
Iโ€™m preparing to travel again to Europe, but this time I want to bring our bikes. 2 road bikes. Iโ€™ll be traveling from USA to the Milan or Rome airport.

Iโ€™d appreciate hearing your thoughts, experience and tips on traveling with a bike. I plan on being fairly stationary with our location and staying in one spot for 2-3 months, then (hopefully train) to another spot for 3 months, etc. So itโ€™s the initial international flight Iโ€™m most concerned about. But realistically, I think a regional flight will be inevitable with the bikes, too.

I know a bike box will be huge and we will have to break down the bike, thankfully our bikes are fairly light weight. Iโ€™m expecting it to be a huge painโ€ฆbut I think the reward of having a good bike to roam around with will be invaluable. Especially since we will be staying in rural areas and donโ€™t want to rent a car.

General range of cost?

Anyone bring their bike and glad they did? โ€ฆWish they didnโ€™t?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 4yr 4 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 4yr 4 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brmolin 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

Are there any nomads from India?

in India by @ankitdas123 4yr 4 years ago  | 56 comments

I have seen a lot of posts from different people across the world, but not even a single post from someone in India, who has been a nomad, either living within the country or traveling to another one.

Would definitely love to hear stories from such people. We are a couple traveling as social nomads who are trying to bridge the gap between the rural and urban societies in India. We have started out very humble and do not have much resources, so looking out for help from the community.

How is Bari, Italy for digital nomads?

Greetings!
Does anyone have experience in Bari, Italy please? We are thinking of going from Dubrovnik, Croatia to Bari by boat in mid-March. Has anyone taken a boat across? Is it nice or can it be choppy? (We are trying to avoid planes, to reduce our carbon footprint, so adding more surface travel.) Also, any info you might be able to offer about Bari and the surrounds? Next step will likely be trains up Italy as the Spring progresses.

Best way to connect with "local" nomads using Nomadlist?

by @migueltic 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi, Iโ€™ve seen that Nomad List offers different options that could work for connecting with other nomads that are in the same place as me (forum, Slack, user maps, matches and maybe even more options I havenโ€™t seen), but Iโ€™m not sure what is the best/recommended way to use all these options.

Should I use all of them? Start with a message in the forum and/or Slack?

Sending private messages to a lot of people feels a little bit โ€œaggressiveโ€. And matches are not based on current location if I understood it correctly.

By the way, I just arrived at Budapest

Best American phone carrier for nomads

by @tylertringas 5yr 5 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m surprised this isnโ€™t anywhere on the forum yet. But just a pro tip for Americans about to start a nomad adventure. T-mobile offers unlimited SMS & data in 120 countries for FREE with any of their (already pretty cheap) plans. Itโ€™s ideal if you plan to be back in the US for any part of the year, but I honestly would consider it even if youโ€™re going to be entirely out of the country.

You get bumped down to much slower 3G speeds, but itโ€™s free and works as soon as you land. Can be super helpful before youโ€™ve sorted yourself out with a local SIM. I usually keep my T-mobile SIM in my iPhone all the time and then buy a local SIM and drop it in my pocket wifi for both laptop and iPhone when needed. I keep my local US number and just use it (itโ€™s like $0.05/min in most places) for important clients calls so they donโ€™t have to bother with Skype.

Iโ€™m not affiliated at all, just a happy customer. Anybody found a better deal worth mentioning?
