What is your Pre-Travel Checklist?

by @chelocoach 8yr  | 7 comments

Iโ€™m building a pre-travel checklist for every flight.

This is what I have up to now.

  • Visa ready
  • Visa Docs
  • Immigration papers
  • Onward Flight
  • 1st week Accommodation / Long term Accommodation
  • 1st week 24/7 Cowork
  • Printed itinerary
  • Following Long Term Stop Planned.
  • Where to buy a Cellphone Data Plan SIM card on arrival
  • Travel Insurance
  • Packing
  • Check-out
  • Airport Transportation (on departure)
  • Airport Transportation (on arrival)
  • Online Flight check-in (plus connections)
  • Check Weather on arrival
  • Schedule events on Google Calendar

I would like to know if you use a pre-travel checklist, if you can share it too, and what experienced nomads think I should add.

Thanks!

Rarely book onward flights (have flyonward.com as a backup)

I know itโ€™s not the greatest answer, but once accom is packed and visa sorted. The only things I really worry about are,

  • passport
  • credit card
  • phone

As long as I have those three, nothing else really matters. Cash sorts everything. Other stuff you forget, you can buy. But I also fly up to 2-3 times a week so donโ€™t stress much anymore - sometimes I donโ€™t even unpack my suitcase.

I always have a Plan B for nearly everything just in case I need a backup - what would you do if your phone or laptop are lost/stolen?

  • Back up all important documents on a hard drive and/or cloud you can access from anywhere.
  • Print AND electronic copies of all IDโ€™s (passport, DL, visa, credit/debt cards, insurance, itineraries/tickets)
  • Alternative mode of transportation if your flight, train or bus gets cancelled.
  • Contact info for relatives, friends, business associates
  • Alert your bank of your travel plans so they donโ€™t block transactions. Some banks flag specific countries so I always know which ones they block, and use a different card for those.
Something always goes awry along the way, so being prepared makes these snafuโ€™s easier to handle.

@kathrynoh 8yr

I donโ€™t have an actual checklist but do have a getting to and from the airport plan. About a week before I travel, I made sure I have all the details I need - if itโ€™s an Airbnb and they havenโ€™t contacted me, I get in touch and work out check-in details etc.

I always have travel insurance - and Iโ€™ve used it enough to continue using it. But I donโ€™t get it for every trip, just every 6 months or so since Iโ€™m constantly on the go.

Before travelling, I do a check that I have all my stuff. Using the same bag and putting stuff in the same spot every time makes that easy.

Checking out SIM card requirements is worth doing since in some places itโ€™s much easier to pick up one at the airport than anywhere else.

Iโ€™ll normally book my accommodation for my full time in a place and like to plan things out (eg. buying flights, booking accomm) a fair way in advance. Iโ€™m not that comfortable with leaving things to chance/my whims.

I never worry about co-working etc. If I arrive somewhere and find that I donโ€™t have the requirements I need for working, Iโ€™ll think about it then but would rather work in my apartment.

Normally when I book a place, Iโ€™ll look up the address on google maps and save it so itโ€™s easy to find. Iโ€™ll also look up cafes and other places of interest in the neighbourhood and save them.

Workwise, I have everything scheduled ahead in a spreadsheet and add in where Iโ€™ll be to that as I make plans so I can adjust for it. If Iโ€™m going to only be somewhere short-term then I try to make it a lighter work week, that kind of thing.

  • paper clips (to change sim card)
  • pen (for immigration papers)
  • earplugs (for sleeping)
  • bose speaker
  • hammock
  • converter
  • iphone charger
  • iPad charger
  • iPad (if using Duet)
  • USD cash (small bills)
  • foreign currency (rarely beforehand)
  • debit card (notify bank)
  • credit card (notify bank)
  • drivers license
  • swim goggles
  • baseball hat
  • flashlight

  • swimtrunks
  • shorts

Yes, I wander when youโ€™re an experienced traveler you donโ€™t have to think about this very much. But until now I only travel like once every two years. So until I get used to it, a checklist is useful

@wanderingdev

  • you never get asked about the onward or out of the country flight at immigrations, or at getting a visa?
  • same question for travel insurance?

iโ€™ve never been asked about travel insurance.

i donโ€™t generally go places i need to get a visa in advance.

the UK is the only place that ever asks me about onward travel so I do get a flight out for there but i just get a cheap ryan air ticket, not necessarily one Iโ€™ll use. and i now tend to avoid the UK for this and other related reasons.

these are all advantages of having a US passport so YMMV depending on where you are from.

wowโ€ฆ thatโ€™s intense. lol

iโ€™ve been doing this a while (@ 8 years)

mine is basically:

  • do I have all my crap?
  • do i know where Iโ€™m staying my first night?
  • do I know how Iโ€™m getting to the next place?

cool, letโ€™s go!

  • i rarely have onward flights
  • i have only had visa stuff twice, but thatโ€™s a benefit of being from the USA
  • i never print anything
  • i donโ€™t cowork
  • i rarely plan the next stop unless i have a commitment elsewhere (house sit, etc.). i generally plan the next stop a week or so before i leave my current location.
  • i donโ€™t do travel insurance
  • i donโ€™t bother checking the weather, i canโ€™t change it

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?
