What are the implications of double nationality for a 'potential' US citizen?

by @arb 9yr  | 7 comments

Hi All

Newbie here enjoying the site. Quick question. What reservations would you have about taking on dual nationality: EU Country + USA. I have been in the US for several years but if we want to start roaming again in the future what are the key implications - beyond needing to file a US tax return for the rest of my life?

Thanks

A.

going back to the US twice a year is less of a pain in the ass than dealing with the US govt for the rest of your life. I was a nanny in switzerland and the parents were swiss/american. they made sure to get their kids dual citizenship and now they regret it because they saddled their kids with dealing with all the US BS forever. not worth it.

Woops my bad, I didnโ€™t realize it was every 6 months! In some countries itโ€™s every 2 yearsโ€ฆ now I understand the dilemma. Well, I guess it just matters what you want out of life. But US citizenship just comes with a lot more responsibilities than other citizenships and is hard and expensive to get rid of if you choose that for yourself in the future. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do!

American-born, dual citizen here. DONโ€™T DO IT.
First, although I love your enthusiasm about the messed up political system, you arenโ€™t going to keep the bastards at bay with your vote, even if you are registered in a swing state. American politics is some messed up stuff and who knows where it will go in the future. My view is that theyโ€™re all bastards and I feel obligated to vote for whoever is less of a bastard. Donโ€™t let that be a reason to get citizenship.

For your other point, I donโ€™t know what the rules are on physical presence, but donโ€™t you get perm res. after having a GC for a while? And then itโ€™s setting foot in the US once every 2 years to maintain it? I could be wrong, but if thatโ€™s true, itโ€™s really not a big hassle (relatively speaking) for you to maintain in terms of flights and convenience. I donโ€™t know where youโ€™re thinking your life will take you but it seems like a potentially small future inconvenience to maintain perm. res. there.

Like others have mentioned, itโ€™s really not worth the tax implications. If you want to work while outside the EU, you donโ€™t have to pay taxes on that money. If you are a US citizen, no matter where you work anywhere in the world, you will have to at least file with the US and deal with all sorts of BS. Keep it simple. Donโ€™t do it.

Hi Lucha

Thanks for thoughtful response. On the GC and time outside the country the actual period is 6 months not two years. It is obviously manageable but for example if you wanted to go hang out in SE Asia for a couple of years then chasing back to the US twice a year becomes a big pain the ass. Moreover the whole family would need to do the same thing.

The US tax code needs changing and has to seriously be harming the US in terms of these penalties which almost no other country seems to inflict on their citizensโ€ฆ!

I see two main advantages - since I am on a green card.

  1. I can vote (someone has got to try and keep the bastards at bay).
  2. I can leave the US for extended periods and not lose my GC.

You might be limited in terms of banking as well. Not an expert on this, but as far as I know, fewer and fewer foreign banks are willing to take (regular, non-millionaire) US citizens as customers. Too much trouble, reporting, etc.

Mind if I reverse the question: what possible advantages do you see in becoming a US citizen? Shouldnโ€™t an EU passport work equally well for the purposes of travel?

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Where to move for tax purposes as a non-US citizen?

by @mender 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

I am a New Zealander looking to travel for a couple of years in different countries. For this purpose I would ideally like to shift my company to a lower tax territory where I will live part time, as I am currently taxed at roughly 33% in New Zealand, however itโ€™s closer to 40% when I add in all the hidden taxes.

With a move I wonโ€™t be living in NZ so Iโ€™ll no longer be obliged to pay any tax after 320 days.

I ideally would wish to be a tax resident of the country I incorporate in. What country is easiest to do this through? A large chunk of my business relies on PayPal which requires your bank account to be from the same country your company is registered. Thus I canโ€™t do anything such as BVI or small islands.

Tbh my best bet looks to be Dubai Free Zones at this point and I can do some travel in europe from there.

Is it possible to become a digital nomad as a Vietnamese citizen?

in Vietnam by @animaniax 6yr 6 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi all!
I was meant to post this little inquiry for some times, and keep skipping due to tight schedule :v.
First off: The name is Toan. Yes, Iโ€™m Vietnamese and non-US/EU citizen
Second: Is it possible for me to become a full digital nomad?

Iโ€™m aware that itโ€™s never been an easy road. Just wondering how itโ€™d be for non-US/EU citizens like myself.
I have a +5 years background as IT support analyst, with specialties vary from helpdesk technical, Windows OS and system support, IT infra/service management, business analysis fundamental, software project management, to Linux sysadmin and programming (Java/Ruby).
Recently, along with my aims to become DevOps/IT Project Management, I also target to fully independent location, due to new found passions on exploring the world and growing tired of 9-to-6 days.

From what I have observed so far, mates, youโ€™re all/mostly coming from 1st-class nations, either North America, Japan, or Europe. So you have no issues over choosing your path, work remotely or start your own business. While money isnโ€™t really a problem to me (a.k.a I usually require very little accommodation during my backpack travels, only (wireless) internet and clean room, thatโ€™s all), Iโ€™m stuck with the whole visa requirements and other paperwork things. Freelance could be a choice, but I find it is almost impossible finding positions even remotely related with my current skills/expertise. Iโ€™m a non-American, have no EU permitted working visaโ€ฆ Any other options for me? Any idea/suggestion is welcomed.

I donโ€™t need my own business. I only need to strive as IT professional, be able to work anywhere I want.

Thanks for the attention, mates. My apologize if my English is so bad that you have no idea what Iโ€™m writing :v And yes, I understand that all my concerns might sound naive, as Iโ€™m a newbie & only targeting recently.

Have you obtained a Thai single entry visa in AU as a non-AU citizen?

by @sarab 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Hi guys,

Iโ€™m planning to spend a month in Australia before 3-4 months in Thailand, and was wondering if anyone has any experience of applying for the single entry Thai tourist visa in Australia while being a citizen of another country. I ask because in the UK, for example, they wonโ€™t give you that visa unless you are a UK resident, and I wonโ€™t be an OZ resident then.

I will be travelling before that so cannot apply in my home country.

I am aware of the Penang option, but I am specifically asking about this scenario.

Any feedback would be gratefully received!

If you don't have a residence, where do you pay taxes as a European citizen?

by @mpp 8yr 8 years ago  | 68 comments

While his type of question has been asked before, please bear with me as the existing threads donโ€™t match/answer my questions.

tl;dr

German citizen working as a consultant for a US startup and moving perpetually every < 3months.

  • (Where) Do I pay taxes when I technically donโ€™t have a residence?
  • Is it allowed by European/German law to not have a residence?
  • Are there countries where you can get a residence w/o staying 6 month/year or large investments, that do not tax non-remitted foreign-sourced income?
  • Can you recommend a good European/German tax advisor who could give a professional opinion?
  • Do I need to start a company to invoice an US company for consultancy work?

less short version:

Inspired by this community & @levelsio, Iโ€™m in the process of becoming a digital nomad myself. The one issue that is currently blocking me is sorting out what the best way to handle taxes is. Iโ€™ve been offered a job by a US startup, they want to hire me as a remote consultant (contractor). Iโ€™m not limited to a location and free to move where/as often as I want.

As the German tax authorities are known for not joking around, I want to make sure I handle the tax issue correctly. My research so far leads me to believe that as long as I donโ€™t own any property in Germany or do any business there, I should be fine with not paying taxes there. Switching countries at least once every three months also should be sufficient to not create any tax obligations in the respecitive countries.

While in theory this sounds like you donโ€™t have to have a residence anywhere and are not obliged to pay taxes, I have a hard time believing that this is not covered by International/European/German law. Did anyone (ideally European/German citizen) consult a tax advisor / lawyer on this and can give an educated answer to this? Iโ€™d also be thankful for recommendations for good tax advisors specialized on this topic.

Last but not least, as I havenโ€™t freelanced before: Do I need to start a company to be able to invoice the US company for my consultancy work or could I just do this as an individual?

Sorry for this rather long post, thanks to everyone whoโ€™ll take the time to answer <3

Is WorldNomads enough or do I need additional insurance as a US citizen?

by @stefanlesser 8yr 8 years ago  | 9 comments

Iโ€™m planning to leave the US in May, travel for at least a year, maybe longer, and it is unclear, if Iโ€™m going back to the US at all, except for brief visits.

Looking at WorldNomads I seem to be covered for pretty much anything bad that could happen. But what happens, if I have to be transported back to US? If I understand correctly, WorldNomads is out at that point and Iโ€™m left with whatever insurance I have there.

How do you deal with this?

How to acquire a 180 days visa for Brazil as a French citizen?

in Brazil by @matthieudrula 9yr 9 years ago  | 14 comments

Hey guys!
Iโ€™m going to Brazil to bootstrap my company (I will use my UK company because itโ€™s easier) in 4 months.
Iโ€™m French and since France-Brazilโ€™s match in 1998, they decided to disable the 90 days extension of stay for France (kidding about the world cup wink).
I want to stay there for 180 days, every visa that I see require an extension(that us French people canโ€™t use) after the first 90 days.
Anybody got into this situation?

Can I work remotely for US companies as a non-US citizen?

by @int03e 9yr 9 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello, folks!
My name is Andry, Iโ€™m software developer from the Eastern Europe.

Iโ€™m trying switch to nomad-style lifestyle.

However, there is a problem: money. I definitely can work remote on sites like odesk/elance, and gain, say, $3000/month. Itโ€™s enough for living, but itโ€™s sounds not so good for my savings.
I assume, that Iโ€™d need some money after that crazy life for the cozy life. 401k, if you know, what I mean.

As I see, most of you, mates, are from 1st world countries, such as USA or Canada or Australia, etc. So, you do have a choice - work remotely for companies from your countries, or try to do your own business. May be freelance is an option too, but I donโ€™t see the way for me really to gain more than 3K on freelance. It requires really good manager skills, even more than software development skills.
I donโ€™t have passion for the second option, and wonder about the first one.

Say, I want to work for USA company remotely. Do the right work, gain the right salary (even $70.000/year except taxes), so Iโ€™ll be able to do some savings. Iโ€™m not USA citizen, and donโ€™t have a H1B visa. Any options on that remote contract?

Saw propositions on nomadsjobs.io. Itโ€™s definitely unclear for dudes like me. Some USA firm hires people, and yes, remote work is an option as they say in job description. Only for USA people however, I suppose?

Iโ€™m totally newbie with that, sorry if that is a stupid question.

P.S.
Sorry about my english, I feel ashamed, and I do my best to improve it asap. I do hope youโ€™ll understand me btw, I believe.
