Looking for a place to hibernate and surf in Jan/Feb/March - any tips?

by @tvr3000 7yr  | 14 comments

Hi all,

For Jan through March Iโ€™m looking for a place that as a) friendly people, b) warm climate, c) surfing, and d) reliable internet (either in cafes or a coworking space).

So far, this is my short list:

  • Canggu, Bali (already was there last year, but too busy with work then)
  • Phillippines (I donโ€™t know where yet, but Iโ€™ve read Baler might be nice)
  • Mexico (but havenโ€™t yet researched)
  • Nicaragua (but havenโ€™t yet researched)

If anyone has some good info on this, please share! : )

Iโ€™m in San Juan del Sur right now, and although I mostly agree with the comment, I think itโ€™s an easy town for those who want to go surfing and work from nice cafรฉs. The beaches around are gorgeous. If I can help with anything about San Juan del Sur and even Nicaragua, let me know, my gf is from here and I start to know the country well.

February and March are off season in Nicaragua, it can be weeks totally flat and not much to do, In any other season, Nicaragua is one of the best places on earth (I would skip San Juan del Sur though, getting too touristy on the bad way)

Mexico is a bit better in winter, particularly on the south, Oaxaca coast. They use to say that there are no waves in winter, what means, you can surf a decent head size wave pretty much every day. Surf season for locals standards is when the swell is double overheadโ€ฆMexico IMO is by far the most interesting for culture and cuisine, other than surf. Been living in Puerto Escondido long ago, best surf ever, not the easier though

Canary Islands rocks in winter, and not that cold as 13ยบ C, water temp is 17ยบ at 20 meters deep (the coldest ever seen when diving here in winter) Most of the days youโ€™ll wear boardshorts and flip flops during the day, jacket and sneakers at night. At least here in Fuerteventura, yes, you need a car to go surfing, like everywhere in the surfing world if you really want to get good waves; you are gonna drive and you are gonna wake up early, but thatโ€™s not the real inconvenience is it?

How do digital nomads deal without cars? Do you rent out a car, if so that would get expensive real quick. And buying one just for a few months would probably more hassle than its worth.

What do nomadic surfers do??

They usually share rented cars. In Corraljejo, you have pretty much everything you need, including surfing within a walking distance. When island hopping, activities and surf, we share car and expenses.

Are you looking for somewhere cheap? If Australia is not out of consideration, I am in Byron Bay right now and it is just wonderful. Itโ€™s basically like Canggu but in Australiaโ€ฆ i.e. loads of hipsters, hippies, nomads and backpackers. Amazing surf. Clean air. Funky little coworking space (Startinno) which is $20 AUD/ day or $140/mth. You can get cheap accoms in the facebook accom groups, airbnb is expensive (search byron bay rental slueth, byron rentals, etc etc).

itโ€™s just such a long flight from AMS (+24hr), and pretty expensive as well. But from what Iโ€™ve heard itโ€™s really greatโ€ฆ maybe in the future!

Iโ€™m going to Las Palmas Gran Canaria for exactly thisโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve heard the vibe is good, big digital nomad scene and itโ€™s the perfect time of year for surfing. Iโ€™m currently surfing in Bali and Jan/Feb isnโ€™t great in Cangguโ€ฆ youโ€™d be better to go to sanur on the east coast in Jan/Feb but not impossible to surf in Canggu. Itโ€™s getting rainy here though so Gran Canaria is calling me. Looks pretty cheap too, Iโ€™ve been offered a room for 300 Euros a month

If, for any reason, you had or wanted to stay in or near Europe, Iโ€™d encourage you to look into Canary Islands. Temperature is around 20ยฐC all year round and especially Gran Canaria is deemed a surferโ€™s paradise  The local tech scene is growing too with Las Palmas being the hub (alternatively Tenerife and Fuerteventura have some coworking spaces too).

Living costs are pretty cheap for European standards, internet is reliable (depending on the coworking place/accommodation of course) and the islands provide plenty of opportunities for exploring (definitely enough for 3-4 months).

The only downside is that English is not that widely spoken around but if youโ€™re not planning on integrating entirely and/or founding a local business you should be okay with just basic phrases and English.

interesting! Iโ€™ve considered it before, but thought itโ€™d be too cold in the winter. I thought average temp was like 13C in jan & feb?

I speak some spanish, and can quickly catch up, so language wonโ€™t be a big thing i guess.

Iโ€™m going to research this more, thanks for the suggestion!

@delia
yeah great points!
The only drawback is that I have my drivers license for less than a year, so I canโ€™t rent a car, which Iโ€™ve heard is pretty essential for going to surfing spots in gran canaria. Any thoughts/suggestions on that?

My personal favorite for winter is Taiwan, because:

  • Fast (uncensored) internet
  • No visa (for most westerners)
  • Good food
  • Relatively modern in general
  • Beautiful landscapes outside the cities
  • Very safe
  • Low cost of living, especially outside of Taipei

I recommend the southern cities like Kaohsiung. I have never looked for surfing opportunities there, but considering itโ€™s an island I assume surfing should be possible

I donโ€™t have โ€˜goodโ€™ info, but have you checked out Kuta on Lombok? I was there for a few days, years ago. Super chilled surfing spot. Really nice vibe (nothing like Kuta, Bali). Some guesthouses with decent internet, from memory.

Are co-working spaces a good way to meet people in a new city?

by @donaldbough 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

My fiancรฉe and I are most likely moving to NYC (maybe DC) in August, and as a technical startup co-founder I'd love to meet new people that are also into startups. Would joining a co-working space be worth the money to do this?

I work for a big tech company that has an office in NYC, but it's mainly sales so I wouldn't be able to meet others that are related to any of my 9-5 work or likely into tech.

If co-working spaces, post covid of course, aren't a good way to meet business starting people in a new city, what is?

Where do I get good legal advice/support to have a long-term stay in Portugal?

in Lisbon , Portugal by @mzorrilla 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hello, everyone!

My idea is to stay as low as 6 months and as long as a year (maybe, who knows) over Lisbon after doing some analysis from many cities in Europe.

I'm an Argentinian and Chilean (both nationalities) so... no Euro-pass for me (getting my Italian nationality could take 2 years easily). I'm also a remote worker and I have a really good income (I work for a Silicon Valley company) so I can show more than enough resources to stay in the country.

Everything I see online doesn't inspire me much confidence (most sites looks a bit scammy) and this is not a "vacation stay"... I want to be clear my head far away from Argentina right now. If someone has a good website, recommendations, etc I will super appreciate.

Thanks in advance!

Best place for solo UK traveller for surf, sun & working between Oct and Dec??

Hey Nomads, would love to know any thoughts here.

Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??

Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.

Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.

Thanks a million. Much love.

Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

What investment options are open to e-resident?

by @64tankman 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I know from experience that if you have residential status in countries where IG (a broker) serves, you can buy stocks and other assets through this broker. But I wonder what doors to the stock market, asset market or broker can be unlocked with e-residency? Some banks open a terminal for customers to buy assets overseas too, is one of the e-residency friendly bank offering a good portfolio of assets to invest in?

Looking for a warm place, possibly near the sea with excellent wifi

hello  Iโ€™m planning my next trip (from January/February), and Iโ€™m looking for a place where itโ€™s hot, with the sea, and good wifi.
At the moment I live in Paris and work with San Francisco times, so preferably I wouldnโ€™t go to Asia.
Iโ€™m thinking, South Africa or South America, what do you recommend?
Thank you

My first time nomad-ing... Spain or Portugal?

in Portugal by @jasraj 4yr 4 years ago  | 6 comments

Hey everyone,

Iโ€™m a freelance + nomad newbie, off for my 1st proper trip in May. Iโ€™m wanting to spend a month somewhere and go from there.

I just came back from Slovenia/Ljubljana and loved it there (just a week). I donโ€™t mind โ€œsleepierโ€ places par-say, as long as theyโ€™re close to a beach or nature of some kind. In fact, I kinda like places less-busy and a bit smaller/cosier.

Iโ€™m been swaying towards Porto, but have been impressed by the rave reviews Iโ€™ve seen for Valencia.

-> Have you every nomad-ed in a Spanish/Portuguese city? Iโ€™d love to know where and what you liked/disliked

Thanks!

Central America - Where and what's next?

by @as11 4yr 4 years ago  | 11 comments

Currently in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico and heading to Santa Teressa, Costa Rica next week.
Then Aruba in the Caribbean Sea for Christmas and New Year.

However I feel I want to head back to Central America to bring living costs down, rather than staying in the Caribbean Sea among the expensive Islands.

This means I have around 2 - 2,5 month of unplanned travelling.
Any digital nomads who have ideas about where to head in that timeframe?

Where to move for tax purposes as a non-US citizen?

by @mender 5yr 5 years ago  | 5 comments

I am a New Zealander looking to travel for a couple of years in different countries. For this purpose I would ideally like to shift my company to a lower tax territory where I will live part time, as I am currently taxed at roughly 33% in New Zealand, however itโ€™s closer to 40% when I add in all the hidden taxes.

With a move I wonโ€™t be living in NZ so Iโ€™ll no longer be obliged to pay any tax after 320 days.

I ideally would wish to be a tax resident of the country I incorporate in. What country is easiest to do this through? A large chunk of my business relies on PayPal which requires your bank account to be from the same country your company is registered. Thus I canโ€™t do anything such as BVI or small islands.

Tbh my best bet looks to be Dubai Free Zones at this point and I can do some travel in europe from there.

Property Ownership - should digital nomads buy properties?

by @sparrow_23 5yr 5 years ago  | 16 comments

I have been a digital nomad for the last couple of years. I have always worked in tech and now run a couple of profitable online businesses that give me a reliable income and allow me to fund a nomadic lifestyle.

I recently exited one of my businesses and I am considering to invest the income from the sale in properties, mainly for 2 reasons:

a) I donโ€™t want to keep wasting my money in renting apartments across the cities I stay

b) I believe in properties as investment and I want to diversify my investment portfolio (mainly stocks)

After years of constant wander from one place to another, now I am the type of digital nomad who sticks to few locations: I mainly rotate across 4 places each year (San Francisco, Medellin, Berlin, Bali). Buying a house in each of those location would be difficult and too expensive. Therefore, I was wondering if there was any sort of service that combines an investment opportunity with the ability to access different properties around the world (even if just for a limited time per year) ?

Imagine living in 4 cities per year and having a house in each place that you can exclusively use for 3 months and at the same time having your investment growing (this depending on the market, of course). Wouldnโ€™t that be great? I believe it could be done via a property fund selling you a share and giving you access to some of their properties for a limited timeframe each year.

Has anyone heard of anything like that?

Thanks!
