I'll be entering the UK for 6 months, will immigration ask to see my finances?

by @shayna 9yr  | 24 comments

Hi!

I (American) and my husband (Brazilian) are going to London for 6 months.

Heโ€™s going to study English - heโ€™s already registered & paid for the course.

Iโ€™m going to be a touristโ€ฆ and work on my online business.

Iโ€™ve heard UK border control can be a bit difficult and am wondering if they are likely to ask for financial evidence that we can support ourselves for six months.

I have savings in the bank, but of course Iโ€™ll also be receiving regular, stable income from the online business (I could show them a history of payments stretching back a year or more, if necessary).

Any thoughts/tips?

Thanks in advance!

I have been in the UK for a week now.

The immigration/border officer asked a couple of questions which are pretty standard:

  • How long are you staying
  • Where are you going next
  • How are you supporting yourself (I mentioned him that I work remotely)

Iโ€™m an American who has entered the UK visa-free two (and a half) times over the past year. The border checks were more thorough and serious than Iโ€™ve experienced elsewhere in Europe, and they did ask me once about how I was planning to support myself, but nobody asked to see my actual finances. Nobody asked to see an onward ticket, either โ€” just an estimate of how long I was planning to stay. (I think I said something on the order of โ€œa few monthsโ€.)

Caveat: I was arriving by Chunnel bus from mainland Europe. YMMV if you come by plane.

It might be a good idea to have a printout of a bank statement just in case!

Ahh, just realized this was an old threadโ€ฆbut will add my two-cents for future browsers:

Iโ€™m an American and they not only questioned me, but detained me for three and a half hours and then ultimately didnโ€™t let me in. And I know another nomadic American that had the same issue.

I agree with everyone above, definitely donโ€™t mention working (and keep in mind that any sort of volunteering, housesitting, pet-sitting, etc. is considered work).

In my case, after being detained, they did ask for proof of funds (which I did not have on me). So this is an excellent question. I normally wouldnโ€™t advise people to travel with bank statements, but going into the UK it might be a good idea to have a statement on you.

Hi everyone, Iโ€™ve luckily never been asked to prove my personal finance when trying to get a visa but Iโ€™m just worrying that it may happen sometime in the future, so what should I prepare for it? Can I just print out the page in my online banking site or have to have a bank statement provided from the bank with some officerโ€™s signature? Hope someone can advise. Thanks!

I had the printed page from my online banking site (printed out as close to the date of travel as possible) but the officer didnโ€™t ask to see it. He only asked the amount, and was satisfied with my verbal answer. Might depend on the country and on the officer, though; some may be stricter than others.

Update: My husband and I got in successfully. The immigration officer asked:

  • Purpose of trip (me = tourism; husband = studying)
  • Length of trip (just under 6 months)
  • Whether we had an outbound ticket - we did - and he asked to see it
  • What exactly I would be doing while my husband was studying for 6 months - I said sightseeing. He seemed a bit skeptical and then askedโ€ฆ
  • How we planned to support ourselves - I said โ€œsavingsโ€ - he asked how much - I told him the amount, and he was satisfied and did not ask to see my bank statement, even though I had it printed out and ready

Hope this info helps anyone else considering staying a few months in the UK!

This is usually the type of questions you get asked at the border by UK immigration officers. I just saw this post and its good you did not mention work. But for the purposes of the type of visit visa you can be working on your online business. The rules really are about not working in the UK and getting paid for it. Its an old concept and like @wanderingdev said it will confuse them so better keep it simple.

It will be ok to show them that you have the funds being earned online but keep in mind the immigration rules. If you meet them, they they should let you through.

US visitors do not need a visa to visit for a short period but for certain other nationalities, you will. Check out our tips for UK visit visas

I had been in Google Campus (https://www.campuslondon.com/) twice. Itโ€™s a great place to work. The only thing you need to do is signup through the website and head to the campus. Once inside, you need to take a chair and start to work. They have a super high speed internet and a coffee inside. Itโ€™s a quiet enviroment despite of being a coworking space). I went there 2 times and in both, I can grab a chair as soon as I arrived.

Where are you living? I had gone to The Timberyard too, itโ€™s near the Google Campus. I think it looks like the Fleet River as you described. When you enter doesnโ€™t look big but thereโ€™s a downstairs room too.

Check it out this link too: http://www.locappy.com/blog/blog/best-cafes-and-places-to-work-from-in-london

Working mostly from home, actually! Would love to hear suggestions about good places to work if you know of any.

For the first few days, before I had my home internet set up, I went to the Fleet River Bakery - doesnโ€™t look big when you initially enter, but thereโ€™s a large back room and downstairs room, and they have power outlets. Important to arrive outside of the breakfast/lunch rush, though.

Iโ€™d also look for public libraries. I used to work in the Keats Library (right next to the Keats House; very inspirational place to write a book ;-). The British Library cafe is a cool place, but gets full quickly. Google campus is another option (they have a free cafe and a paid co-working space). I worked a lot in Starbucks and Costa, since there are so many around

@wanderingdev @Yemoonyah - Thanks - Iโ€™ll definitely not mention working online! This is exactly the type of info I needed to know.

Weโ€™ll have genuine onward tickets to leave the UK a couple weeks before our 6 months are up. And through some reshuffling of funds, I think Iโ€™ll be able to pump up my bank account enough to prove sufficient support for two non-working people for half a year.

An American might not normally get questioned, but an American + a Brazilian who plan on just studying/tourism for multiple months might be unusual.

Iโ€™ll update this thread after we travel.

I agree. Do not mention that you will be working!
Maybe print out a bank statement in advance in case they want proof. And the tip to book a cheap flight is great! EasyJet.com has super cheap flights in Europe.

Also, I have no idea how this works in the UK but the last time I flew to the US they wouldnโ€™t even let me board the plane in Amsterdam because I ONLY had an onward flight to Colombia and none back to the EU. They made me buy one then and there.

An alternative to Skyscanner from UK is Money Saving Expertโ€™s Flight Scanner.
You can search from a popular hub (LHR, MAN, BHX) and choose โ€œIโ€™ll go anywhereโ€. There are some seriously cheap flights out there. You could even schedule a cheapie over a weekend and actually go for a mini break!

The other option is you get a refundable ticket for, say, a month after you land and lie about how long youโ€™re planning on staying. (I assume you have enough savings in the bank to prove you can both survive for a month). As long as you donโ€™t overstay your 6 month visa, itโ€™s not like they will do anything about it if you โ€œdecideโ€ not to leave after the initial month.

IANAL: but as long as youโ€™re not overstaying the visa, I wouldnโ€™t worry about fabricating a better story too muchโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m British so Iโ€™ve never had this issue but considering how many illegal immigrants we actually have in England, I have no idea why theyโ€™d give an American a hard time.

Absolutely DO NOT mention to them that you are earning a single penny while in the UK or they will not let you in unless you have a work visa. Make sure you have proof of onward travel and have a number in your head of how much it will cost you to live and tell them thatโ€™s what you have in the bank.

The UK does not do well, in my experience, with non-traditional travelers. Have a list of places you are going to visit while youโ€™re there (even if youโ€™re not) and at least one person you can use as a local contact.

Last time I flew into the UK they almost didnโ€™t let me in and I got a REALLY long lecture about how it was illegal and I could be arrested and deported if I did any sort of work online while I was there.

Great advice and I think that applies to any countryโ€“even between Canada and the US. โ€œIโ€™m a non-working tourist with sufficient funds abiding by all of your rules, and I have my onward ticketโ€ is a good attitude to have.

You never want border agents thinking youโ€™re coming to their country to work.

Thatโ€™s a great point, @kathrynohโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve been debating how to present that. Perhapsโ€ฆ I earn passive income from a business I own in the U.S.?

I could omit it altogether and simply say Iโ€™m there for tourism. But then if they asked to see 6 monthsโ€™-worth of savings to support two people, Iโ€™d have to say โ€œActually, Iโ€™m receiving regular payments from my U.S.-based business.โ€

Hmmโ€ฆ still considering how best to go about it!

Normally I wouldnโ€™t be so paranoid about this stuff, but now that I have a non-traditional employment situation and a spouse from a developing country, I canโ€™t help but think about it.

how are you getting around the 3-month limit on the visa? (sorry i have not done much research on what the rules are for spouses of studentsโ€ฆ)

i know in general unless you are enrolled in a learning program, or have a work visa, youโ€™re limited to a 3-month stay. for that they do not ask for you to prove finances.

when i went to london, the border patrol did not ask for any proof of finances, but they did ask more questions than when i went to amsterdam - they wanted phone numbers / addresses of where i was staying. they wanted to see my return ticket, etc. not too onerous but more than the quick glance and stamp i got at AMS.

Hmm, according to VisaHQ itโ€™s 180 days (for both Brazilians and Americans, whether tourists or students).

Also says 6 mo. here: https://www.gov.uk/general-visit-visa/overview

Weโ€™ll be staying in an AirBNB for the first week until we find a placeโ€ฆ hopefully theyโ€™ll accept that. And weโ€™ll have an outbound ticket - though it will be onward to another country, not back to our home country.

UK Expats travelling to Greece?

Hi all, my husband and I have been living in Bulgaria for the past month and were hoping to travel to Greece next. Have any UK nationals entered Greece lately? I believe that anyone entering Greece requires a negative COVID test 72 hours before travel - is this what they are requiring at the borders please? How to get post abroad for UK Expats??

Hi guys, wonder if you can help. I'm from the UK, and my husband and I are looking to go across Europe this coming year.

What's the best solution you've found re having all your post sent to you? I've found a site online that will set up a street address in the UK for you and scan in post to your email address, just wondering if you've found any other ways?

We've set up paperless statements, which has helped but with things like mortgages, official docs etc - how have you got around it?

Thanks so much!

Best place in South East Asia to live for 6+ months per year

in Indonesia by @miklaskroager 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

We're looking for a country in South East Asia that can function as our base, mainly for tax purposes. Meaning it will have to be a place where we can stay for the 183 days required without too much hassle.

We've been looking at Thailand, but have heard that it's very hard to do visa runs etc., so what other can you recommend? Indonesia looked like a good option, but the income rate is a flat 20% and very high for the region.

How to get a UK residence address without renting/buying?

by @pavel_maximov 4yr 4 years ago  | 17 comments

Background:
Iโ€™m an EU national IT specialist, recently decided to become a digital nomad. I just left my permanent job in Germany and opened a UK based LTD (for a better taxation) to start a new career as remote working IT contractor. I also want to become a UK resident and pay personal income tax there BUT I donโ€™t want to rent/buy a place because I have no interest in physically living in the UK, as a nomad I will be traveling abroad 100% of the time.

So I just need a UK address where Iโ€™m registered as a resident and could receive mail, but I would never actually be there. I could rent a place and keep it empty but that would be a total waste of money.

Question:
How do I find somebody who could give me an official residence at his/her address and keep my name on the door? Iโ€™m ok with paying a reasonable monthly fee for this โ€œserviceโ€ (but not as high as a rent), and give assurance in whatever form that I will never pretend to physically live there. I have no close friends in the UK to ask for this favor, and trying to propose this to a random landlord would be just weird since they are not familiar with the needs of a digital nomad.

Maybe you guys can suggest me somebody who understand the situation and want to make some extra cash every month to pay the bills? Iโ€™m ready to meet in person, provide full proof of identity or any other document, and to make a written agreement that gives the landlord the freedom to cancel this โ€œsituationโ€ at any time.

Note:
This is NOT for tax evasion, itโ€™s the opposite! I WANT to pay full tax as UK resident, I just donโ€™t want to waste money on a rent which I will literally never use.

I would be very grateful for any advice!

Pavel

How do I ensure that getting refused entry to the UK won't keep me from getting an Australian 462 (work and holiday) visa?

in Australia by @allisonkirschbaum 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

On New Yearโ€™s Day this year, I was refused entry to the UK due to not having proof of funds, an outward-bound plane ticket (I was road-tripping out with a friend via car) and not being able to prove that I had indeed canceled the lease on the apartment I had leased during a prior recent trip.

I havenโ€™t had any entry issues to any of the several countries Iโ€™ve visited after, but now Iโ€™m applying for a 462 visa (work and holiday) visa in Australia, and since Australia and the UK share an immigration info system, I want to make sure getting refused entry wonโ€™t keep me from getting a visa. None of the issues that cropped up in the UK (the proof of funds, the plane ticket, and the apartment) will be an issue in Australia, as Iโ€™ve never traveled there before, donโ€™t know anyone and will have proof of more than sufficient funds for the trip and an outbound plane ticket.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the approval process go as smoothly as possible?

Many thanks in advance!

Is anybody a Digital Nomad in the UK and not a resident?

by @creative_nomad_ 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

The situation is that my BF is a UK citizen and I am not. We are traveling around SEA and planning to stop in the UK for 6 months to rekindle funds. Granted, the UK is not the cheapest place to rekindle funds, however, he can work and get a good job there.

I have already done my working visa in the UK so I canโ€™t legally work there again. Iโ€™m a graphic designer and web designer and have decided that I will try and get freelance work to support myself whilst Iโ€™m over there.

My question is more related to tax and visas. I am an Australia citizen so I can get a 3 month tourist visa. Iโ€™m just a little worried about how strict they are over there on visas and questioning finance etc

Where to pay taxes if self employed non-resident of the UK, travelling Europe?

by @jadi4nd 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi, I know there are a few posts around this topic but none of them quite answer my questions.

I am British and currently a resident in the UK.
Next year I am going to become a non-resident and spend over a year traveling mostly around Europe, moving every few weeks never staying anywhere longer than a month. (My first venture into becoming a digital nomad!)

I am remote, self employed, software developer working mostly for one client based in the UK.

Where am I liable to pay taxes?
From what I have read I will not be liable to pay taxes in UK, can anyone confirm this?
If not the UK then where if I am moving every few weeks?
If possible I want to avoid starting a company as this seems unnecessarily complicated for my work setup.

Thank you in advance for any help

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!

Best EU banks for Ukrainians?

by @anatoliykmetyuk 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi everyone!

I have recently opened a company in Estonia, and now looking for a bank to open a private account to receive salary to. Thing is, I am a Ukrainian citizen, and the fees are huge when making payments from my Estonian company bank account to the Ukrainian private account. For EU transfers, there are no fees. Also I do not feel my money are safe in Ukraine.

So currently I am looking for a bank in EU to open a private account with.

My priority is to have the costs associated with the account as low as possible. E.g. Iโ€™m fine with paying โ‚ฌ200-300 to open the account, but it is a no-go for me if they require a monthly maintenance fee of โ‚ฌ20-30. Which many of them do for foreigners. Also if they need an initial deposit or minimal remainder on the account of โ‚ฌ1000+, this would be a strain for me. Another priority of course is nomad-friendliness: if I decide to withdraw the money outside the EU in a non-EU currency, I should not pay more than 5% in fees. And internet banking and customer support is also of importance, as I believe frequent visits to the bankโ€™s country would be inconvenient for me as a non-resident.

So far I have looked at Swedbank, Rietumu and BlueOrange, all from Latvia. So far I had a great experience with Estonian corporate banking, so another Baltic country seemed like a good option to me. However, all of these banks have high maintenance fees for non-EU residents, from โ‚ฌ20 to โ‚ฌ50 per month. Also OrangeBlue has a minimal balance requirement of โ‚ฌ1000.

All in all, I am very unexperienced in the matter of banking and am a bit in a loss. Can anybody kindly advise me on the โ€œbig pictureโ€ of banking in EU from the non-EU clientโ€™s perspective?

Though still trying  I would appreciate if some one can advise\share any particular area or place where you can rent something similar to Thai condos (like in Pattaya or Chiang Mai) but in Fiji at some reasonable price.
Hope there is something there

Entering Nicaragua with a one way ticket

Does anyone have experiencing entering Nicaragua by plane with a one way ticket ? Specifically, I intend to book a ticket via Spirit. I am aware it is mostly airlines that check for onward travel. Does anyone have experience with this ? Flyonward seems to have been getting bad reviews lately. Would a bus ticket to a neighbouring country be enough to convince Spirit ?

Looking for something to prop up my Asus MB169B+

by @jbweimar 7yr 7 years ago  | 2 comments

I recently purchased a second monitor to connect to my MacBook Pro 15". I use the Nextstand laptop stand to get my MacBook to eye level. Iโ€™m wondering what second monitor (without base) users are using to get their second monitor at the same level. I know of this company Elevate Stand (.com), but it seems a bit heavy and bulky (although I guess it must be somewhat, if it is to hold a monitor).

Moving to Thailand for 6-9 months in August. Bangkok or somewhere else?

in Bangkok , Thailand by @andrea3018 7yr 7 years ago  | 14 comments

Hello Nomads,
I would like to move in Thailand for 6-9 months starting from August.
Iโ€™ll definetely stay in Chiang Mai as base for most of the time but Iโ€™d like to do the first month (August) in Bangkok or somewhere else.
What place would you recommend to visit first?
Would Bangkok be a good place to be during August?
I was also checking at the east coast isles but I got a little frightened out by the moonsoon idea but still, it would be cool to go to beaches and have some sun during that month  .
Would the moonsoons or the rain really be a problem?
Iโ€™ll move to Chiang Mai from september anyway but I would just like to start somewhere else since I have to wait for my girlfriend to come during september.

Thank you in advance for your advices,
Sorry for the bad english,
Andrea

Extending Thai visa immediately after entering possible?

by @gonchs 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

I tried googling this for hours without success.

If I enter Thailand on single entry 60-day visa, can I extend it for +30 days (for a total of 90 days) IMMEDIATELY the next day after the entry?

E.g. entering on Aug 1 and extending it on Aug 2. Have anyone done this?

Is anyone using Charles Schwab vs N26 banks?

by @mary_oleksiuk 7yr 7 years ago  | 11 comments

Hi nomads! Iโ€™m trying to figure out all props and cons of using Charles Schwab vs N26 banks. Is anyone using those banks? If yea - what you like/dont like about it. And if income is mostly in US which one is better to open?

Thanks
