How to get a UK residence address without renting/buying?

by @pavel_maximov 8yr  | 17 comments

Background:
Iโ€™m an EU national IT specialist, recently decided to become a digital nomad. I just left my permanent job in Germany and opened a UK based LTD (for a better taxation) to start a new career as remote working IT contractor. I also want to become a UK resident and pay personal income tax there BUT I donโ€™t want to rent/buy a place because I have no interest in physically living in the UK, as a nomad I will be traveling abroad 100% of the time.

So I just need a UK address where Iโ€™m registered as a resident and could receive mail, but I would never actually be there. I could rent a place and keep it empty but that would be a total waste of money.

Question:
How do I find somebody who could give me an official residence at his/her address and keep my name on the door? Iโ€™m ok with paying a reasonable monthly fee for this โ€œserviceโ€ (but not as high as a rent), and give assurance in whatever form that I will never pretend to physically live there. I have no close friends in the UK to ask for this favor, and trying to propose this to a random landlord would be just weird since they are not familiar with the needs of a digital nomad.

Maybe you guys can suggest me somebody who understand the situation and want to make some extra cash every month to pay the bills? Iโ€™m ready to meet in person, provide full proof of identity or any other document, and to make a written agreement that gives the landlord the freedom to cancel this โ€œsituationโ€ at any time.

Note:
This is NOT for tax evasion, itโ€™s the opposite! I WANT to pay full tax as UK resident, I just donโ€™t want to waste money on a rent which I will literally never use.

I would be very grateful for any advice!

Pavel

Hi Pavel,
You might want to check whether you can pass the national insurance interview, without which you wonโ€™t get a NiNo number and wonโ€™t be able to pay tax afaik. They will ask you what you want the number for, what your clients are etc.

2 different parameters to evaluate: personal residence and business residence. Iโ€™ve been thru that some years ago.
Theyโ€™re two totally different pair of gloves: the business residence is easy, just choose from a lot of incorporating services/accountants (not affiliated with them but suggest http://www.crunch.co.uk or http://ihorizon.co.uk/) The problem is with your personal residence. If you will be the managing director of the company, youโ€™ll need to reside there, otherwise itโ€™s tax evasion. Otherwise you have to hire (also from one of those service providers already mentioned or other fiduciary companies) one. And youโ€™ll be fine with corporate taxation. But then as your personal income and residence, the country where youโ€™ll be living in could give you problems. Itโ€™s a messy european bullshit from bureaucracy but itโ€™s so, for now.

I think, as someone suggested, the best solution is to move yourself to a low taxation country (South East Asia for example or Canary Islands or Portugal or Montenegro) and open a company to the nearest onshore/offshore not on blacklists. I.E. if you move anywhere in Asia (Vietnam is becoming the new China, biz hub) you can easily open an Hong Kong company or Singaporean company without anyone chasing after you cause itโ€™s perfectly legal. But keep in mind you have to move your true residency there in the low tax country.

Hope this helps.

If you have a UK LTD company youโ€™ll need an accountant to complete your annual returns (you canโ€™t do this yourself for a LTD company). Many UK accountants will let you have your mail go to them, especially if itโ€™s just stuff related to running your company.

I keep an address by using UK Postbox (http://www.ukpostbox.com). So far, theyโ€™ve been pretty good. The mail receiving / scanning / address companies are more established in the US, and thereโ€™s more competition, which keeps features constantly improving. (I started in the US and use 2 different services there for my business โ€“ one with a CA address, one with a NY address.) Anyway, UK Postbox isnโ€™t quite as good as some of the US companies, but so far Iโ€™ve been quite happy with it.

Did you just notice that the UK HMRC issued a 103 pages long document that defines the criteria to decide an individualโ€™s tax residency status? It has almost nothing to do with a residence address. With a fake address you canโ€™t prove anything if you donโ€™t actually stay in UK. So your home country will most probably consider this as tax evasion (even if you voluntarily pay taxes in the UK) and you will have to pay lots of late fees and penalties.
My strategy for the same problem is to actually move to a low tax country and live there. UK would be a poor choice for me because I donโ€™t like its weather and living costs.

Iโ€™m British and also need to maintain a UK address - for my bank, for the tax authorities, etc. I tried renting an address, but the company was quite sleazy and basically started blackmailing me, asking for me to pay a yearโ€™s renewal less than six months in, asking for money for this and that, not letting me come to collect my post (as their forwarding costs were exorbitant), harassing meโ€ฆ The โ€˜give us moneyโ€™ emails were quite sporadic and eventually it felt to me like they were just sending emails like that whenever their cash flow was bad! Soooo I found a friend who was happy for me to pay them instead, and everythingโ€™s been OK. Although I have had to change addresses (i.e. change from one friend to another) as the first friend was doing quite a bit of moving herself.

In a nutshell, find a friend in the UK who will let you use their address and pay for the service!

Top of the list are currently Tenerife, Lagos/Ericeira (Portugal) & Malta??

Would love to know if anyone can vouch for these at this time of year.

Beautiful beach would be the dream. Basically European Bali! I'm sure something many of us are searching for.

UK Expats travelling to Greece?

in Bulgaria by @davda1546 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

Hi all, my husband and I have been living in Bulgaria for the past month and were hoping to travel to Greece next. Have any UK nationals entered Greece lately? I believe that anyone entering Greece requires a negative COVID test 72 hours before travel - is this what they are requiring at the borders please? (Reason we ask is for Bulgaria we filled out forms but weren't asked for them) Thanks.

How to get post abroad for UK Expats??

Hi guys, wonder if you can help. I'm from the UK, and my husband and I are looking to go across Europe this coming year.

What's the best solution you've found re having all your post sent to you? I've found a site online that will set up a street address in the UK for you and scan in post to your email address, just wondering if you've found any other ways?

We've set up paperless statements, which has helped but with things like mortgages, official docs etc - how have you got around it?

Thanks so much!

How do you guys deal with the dreaded โ€œproof of addressโ€ for banking and investing and other random stuff?

How to be sure of new tax residence?

by @analogmario 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi, Iโ€™m new here.
I am moving out forever.
So I am going to move to another country my residence.
But, in the new country I donโ€™t plan to spend more than 90 days a year for sure, at least itโ€™s not the plan for the first years.

But I want to be sure that my tax residence is in my new country, even if I spend less than 90 days a year.
I want to be sure I wonโ€™t be reclaimed by my original country or any other country that I might end up spending less than 180 days, but more than the less than 90 I expect to spend in my new country(looks like itโ€™s going to be Portugal).

Hope that was understandable.

Does anyone know where I can get information about this kind related to nomadism?

Thanks

How do I ensure that getting refused entry to the UK won't keep me from getting an Australian 462 (work and holiday) visa?

in Australia by @allisonkirschbaum 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

On New Yearโ€™s Day this year, I was refused entry to the UK due to not having proof of funds, an outward-bound plane ticket (I was road-tripping out with a friend via car) and not being able to prove that I had indeed canceled the lease on the apartment I had leased during a prior recent trip.

I havenโ€™t had any entry issues to any of the several countries Iโ€™ve visited after, but now Iโ€™m applying for a 462 visa (work and holiday) visa in Australia, and since Australia and the UK share an immigration info system, I want to make sure getting refused entry wonโ€™t keep me from getting a visa. None of the issues that cropped up in the UK (the proof of funds, the plane ticket, and the apartment) will be an issue in Australia, as Iโ€™ve never traveled there before, donโ€™t know anyone and will have proof of more than sufficient funds for the trip and an outbound plane ticket.

Anybody have any suggestions on how to make the approval process go as smoothly as possible?

Many thanks in advance!

How to do without permanent address nor local bank?

by @tradeaway 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

I am soon to find out one way or another as I will leave my residency to become a nomad myself. I have not found a good solution for Bali or Asian countries on the internet.

I read our existing Nomadlist posts under Money tag. Money handling and charges around accessing it seem to be a big issue for nomads, soon my issue. As a post I read said, accessing money for a Nomad can be harder than making money. I am more worried about accessing money than having some.

Iโ€™ll use Transferwise Borderless account to keep my day to day living money. I am opening a Pte Ltd corporate, that only goes for business-related expenses.
My Canadian credit card will charge me an arm and a leg in fees and currency conversion for me to get Indonesian Rupiah in Bali from Canadian dollar account. Then at some point, my credit card will complain I am not in Canad anymore.
Not knowing better, Iโ€™ll try that. If that works good and still live me short on how to go for smaller and random daily expenses.

Thanks for your help!
Enjoy your Nomad living!!

Is anybody a Digital Nomad in the UK and not a resident?

by @creative_nomad_ 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

The situation is that my BF is a UK citizen and I am not. We are traveling around SEA and planning to stop in the UK for 6 months to rekindle funds. Granted, the UK is not the cheapest place to rekindle funds, however, he can work and get a good job there.

I have already done my working visa in the UK so I canโ€™t legally work there again. Iโ€™m a graphic designer and web designer and have decided that I will try and get freelance work to support myself whilst Iโ€™m over there.

My question is more related to tax and visas. I am an Australia citizen so I can get a 3 month tourist visa. Iโ€™m just a little worried about how strict they are over there on visas and questioning finance etc

Where to pay taxes if self employed non-resident of the UK, travelling Europe?

by @jadi4nd 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi, I know there are a few posts around this topic but none of them quite answer my questions.

I am British and currently a resident in the UK.
Next year I am going to become a non-resident and spend over a year traveling mostly around Europe, moving every few weeks never staying anywhere longer than a month. (My first venture into becoming a digital nomad!)

I am remote, self employed, software developer working mostly for one client based in the UK.

Where am I liable to pay taxes?
From what I have read I will not be liable to pay taxes in UK, can anyone confirm this?
If not the UK then where if I am moving every few weeks?
If possible I want to avoid starting a company as this seems unnecessarily complicated for my work setup.

Thank you in advance for any help

Has anyone worked from Sihanoukville, Cambodia?

Hey everyone,

Has anyone visited Sihanoukville recently? I would like to visit and give it a try for working but I am a little unsure about the following:

  • Internet reliability (power cuts and speed)
  • 4G connection as backup
  • specific areas to live

In anyone can offer any info, suggestions on specific areas or recommended accommodation that would be great. I visited around 8 years ago so I am assuming the place has changed quite a bit since then.

Thanks!

Best EU banks for Ukrainians?

by @anatoliykmetyuk 6yr 6 years ago  | 1 comment

Hi everyone!

I have recently opened a company in Estonia, and now looking for a bank to open a private account to receive salary to. Thing is, I am a Ukrainian citizen, and the fees are huge when making payments from my Estonian company bank account to the Ukrainian private account. For EU transfers, there are no fees. Also I do not feel my money are safe in Ukraine.

So currently I am looking for a bank in EU to open a private account with.

My priority is to have the costs associated with the account as low as possible. E.g. Iโ€™m fine with paying โ‚ฌ200-300 to open the account, but it is a no-go for me if they require a monthly maintenance fee of โ‚ฌ20-30. Which many of them do for foreigners. Also if they need an initial deposit or minimal remainder on the account of โ‚ฌ1000+, this would be a strain for me. Another priority of course is nomad-friendliness: if I decide to withdraw the money outside the EU in a non-EU currency, I should not pay more than 5% in fees. And internet banking and customer support is also of importance, as I believe frequent visits to the bankโ€™s country would be inconvenient for me as a non-resident.

So far I have looked at Swedbank, Rietumu and BlueOrange, all from Latvia. So far I had a great experience with Estonian corporate banking, so another Baltic country seemed like a good option to me. However, all of these banks have high maintenance fees for non-EU residents, from โ‚ฌ20 to โ‚ฌ50 per month. Also OrangeBlue has a minimal balance requirement of โ‚ฌ1000.

All in all, I am very unexperienced in the matter of banking and am a bit in a loss. Can anybody kindly advise me on the โ€œbig pictureโ€ of banking in EU from the non-EU clientโ€™s perspective?

International health insurance without having a permanent residence?

by @fabyliechti 6yr 6 years ago  | 30 comments

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m a Swiss Citizen but full time traveler (living a few month there and there) and therefore donโ€™t have a permanent residence/home anywhere in the world.

For this reason, Iโ€™m as well not registered in Switzerland and therefore donโ€™t have medical care since I would have to pay at least 200$ monthly for medical care which I wonโ€™t use since Iโ€™m not living there.

As a in Switzerland unregistered Swiss Citizen I donโ€™t have medical care in Switzerland but, however based on Swiss Law Iโ€™m always allowed to return to Switzerland, register and then get medical coverage (f.e. in a medical emergency).

So now I was looking for both, an international health insurance with good coverage and an additional travel insurance for my trips. Unfortunately every insurance I check, I got asked for a permanent residence - which I donโ€™t have and donโ€™t want to. So I donโ€™t know what to fill out and if I still can get insurance without having a permanent residence.

I was wondering if there are any nomads here with a similar situation like me and (not registered anywhere and without a permanent residence)? If so, what health insurance, travel insurance you have and where?

PS. As well Iโ€™m not sure if it is kind of illegal not having a permanent residence anywhere plus where do I have to pay taxes?

Would be extremely grateful for any help on those matters - thanks so much!

How do you manage receiving mail without a permanent address in the Philippines?

in Philippines by @kaizenpreneur 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello all,

I have a mail management service in the UK which all my mail gets sent to. This works fine 90% of the time and most can be dealt with digitally.

The other 10%, I need the mail sent on to me, which they do offer as a service. However, where I struggle is giving them an address to send it to in the Philippines, namely Manila.

Iโ€™ve used DHL for really important stuff, like bank cards, but it would be nice to have an address where I can forward certain mail. Anyone been able to set something up like this in the Philippines? Would a virtual office allow me to receive mail?

Thanks in advance

Which residence/company location is beneficial for an Italian freelancer

by @saschamayr 7yr 7 years ago  | 6 comments

I am an Italian citizen currently living in Italy. I am starting to work as a freelancer and want to open a company in order to invoice the client.
Besides that, I also want to move my main residence away from Italy for multiple reasons.
In which countries should I place my company and/or residence so that the combination of both would be beneficial for me (cost and taxwise)?
Goal would be to rent an apartment and actually move (preferably in Europe), and from there travel as a digital nomad.
Has anyone been in a similar situation or knows an answer to this?

Malta Residence Programme min stay time

in Malta by @pavel_maximov 7yr 7 years ago  | 7 comments

Anybody has experience with Malta โ€œResident Programmeโ€ requirements?
Iโ€™m EU national with a UK Ltd, considering taking Malta residence since you pay no personal tax on sources of foreign income there (if you keep your money in non-Maltese banks and rent property in Malta at all times).
Reading the requirements here:

One point is not totally clear to me, on page 12-13 they list the conditions that would make you loose the residence status (point f):
"[if the resident] Stays in any other jurisdiction for more than 183 days in a calendar year.[he/she loses the resident status]"
Does this just mean I canโ€™t stay in any specific country for more than 183 days, or more broadly I canโ€™t stay 183 days outside of Malta?
For example, if I spend 2 months a year in Malta and other 10 months in other countries but not longer than 3 months each, will I still be considered resident of Malta?
Would appreciate any help.
