How far ahead should tickets be bought for the best price?

by @nihilista 9yr  | 12 comments

Hello everyone,

Iโ€™m sending my passport renewal out in the mail tomorrow and am wondering how far ahead of time I should buy my ticket - likely to Bali or Thailand (Chang Mai). Is there some optimal period of time? Iโ€™d assume DNs tend to buy at the last minute - do you find you are paying a lot more doing this vs. booking ~8 wks ahead (which Iโ€™ve heard is the rule of thumb for intโ€™l flights)?

Thank you!

For most of the year, booking tickets 21-60 days in advance will get you good fares, unless itโ€™s a peak season (say around Christmas or summer). For peak season tickets you should book as far in advance as possible.

I typically buy mine a week or two in advance. Sometimes a few days or less. I just donโ€™t like planning. As you can guess, this has bit me before.

Does the distance of flight actually matter? Are all mentioned suggestions applicable to e.g. USA-Europe flights as well as e.g. local Europe flights?

Sorry for answering so late. My personal experience is that looking ahead about 3 months, if you can afford it, gives you the best opportunities, and some you will otherwise miss. I bought a one-way ticket from Switzerland to Costa Rica for USD 360 which nobody believes is possible. Also, days vary a lot. The mentioned ticket was lowest on Wed, while the return ticket for USD 400 a month later was on Thu.

If you have a couple of airlines you favour, itโ€™s good to sign up for their mailing lists. Iโ€™m on the lists of most of the budget airlines flying out of Australia and often get good deals through them. I rarely read the paper or watch TV so I never know when sales are on otherwise.

Great tip; thank you! I donโ€™t watch TV either and am clueless about sales.

Great tips. Thanks, everyone! I wonโ€™t stress too much about buying the ticket far ahead of time then. Thereโ€™s so much to take care of that I canโ€™t be sure when exactly Iโ€™ll be ready to go. Hopefully Iโ€™ll nab a decent last minute deal!

Iโ€™ve found that the best time to buy is between 30 and 15 days before flight, and be flexible for your take off date. Yes Iโ€™ve read the lifehacker article before, but, thereโ€™s been a few other articles that show statistically day doesnโ€™t actually matter. If I remember right the LH article has a small sample set so use the general grain of salt. My practice is to buy my tickets as often as possible no more than a month ahead unless the deal is especially good. I also donโ€™t plan to arrive or depart on specific days. Instead I give a 2 -5 day range that I am willing to leave and take the cheapest fare in that range.

Optimal time to book a ticket is 45 days ahead, and book it on Wednesday. However, due to a lot of factors, airfares dance crazily and unpredictably so sometimes the last-minute tickets can be cheap, nobody knows.

Wednesday is based on poor sample data, if I remember right the original writer was using Virgin fares. While you can draw parallels, most rules that apply to Virgin do not usually apply anywhere else.

Thanks for the tips! You mean book the flight to leave on a Wed, right?

Book it on Wednesday for a flight that also departs on a Wednesday. Wednesday is a magic day when people get lazy or busy and they donโ€™t spend too much on things, service providers hence have to give away discounts on the day  just found this http://lifehacker.com/the-best-time-and-time-of-day-to-book-airline-tickets-1507704370

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Is anyone travelling right now?

by @viktor 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Winter is coming and Iโ€™m feeling the ache of travelling after being stuck in the same place since the Pandemic started. Wondering if anyone is travelling right now? If so, where are you currently located and how is the situation where you are?

Any insurance covers pregnancy with a good price?

by @yuko 6yr 6 years ago  | 0 comments

I will go on a working holiday to Berlin from this October.
Maybe I will fly to Romania, Poland, Hungary or Portugal after spending several months in Germany, if my budget will get tighter.

Iโ€™m considering Safetywing/.com for my insurance because it covers anywhere in the world with a good price. The problem is, German embassy requires females to sign an insurance covers medical cost for pregnancy for a working holiday visa.

People in my country write about Care College from Care Concept (care-concept/.de) , but I think itโ€™s valid only when youโ€™re in Germany.

I wonder if thereโ€™s any an add-on (free-plan) insurance for pregnancy.
Alternatively, an equivalent insurance with support of pregnancy, and same price range as Safetywing/.com.

Thank you!

Where do I get cheap plane tickets to go to Chiang Mai, Thailand?

in Chiang Mai , Thailand by @talberly 9yr 9 years ago  | 20 comments

Where do I get cheap plane tickets to go to Chiang Mai, Thailand? I would like to know if there is a site where the cost of the plane ticket was under $1,000. If it is offered at a price even lower, the better. I want to minimize expenses as much as possible. Iโ€™m curious to know the price of the flight ticket that digital nomads have purchased in the past and from which sites. Could you help me? Thank You.
