Can you survive with a part time job in London?

in London , United Kingdom by @bjornlindholmdk 9yr  | 6 comments

Hi Nomads
Iโ€™m planning the first destination of my DN life right now. Ideally I want to move to London. My plan is to find a motel or a privat person through workaway.info or helpx.net where I get free accomodation for 5 hours of work 5 days a week.

I then want to find a part time job to cover others costs like food, beer, transport etc. I donโ€™t need a lot to survive. A small part of the income will also go to my new business. I donโ€™t have a lot of expenses through that but not really an income either.

My question is that is this even realistic? Can you make enough from a part time job in London to cover food/transport costs?

Btw. this is only a short term solution from now until the end of the December/New years

London is very expensive, yet outside the professional sector wages are quite low. If you already know you can earn well, then I imagine that you could manage to live there while working part-time, but if youโ€™re thinking about applying for part-time work somewhere, chances are you wonโ€™t be able to survive as those kinds of jobs just donโ€™t pay.

That said, there are ways of keeping your accommodation costs down - being a property guardian, for instance (if you Google โ€˜property guardianโ€™ a number of schemes will come up, the biggest and best known of which is Camelot). You may also be able to find live-in work somewhere - pubs used to offer live-in work, although Iโ€™m not sure how common this is now. Or house-sitting, which is what I did while I was getting myself off the ground as a freelancer: I spent a year in a beautiful Georgian mansion just to provide a security presence. That was in Surrey rather than right in London, but I was only half an hour away if I needed to meet with someone or attend an event. I spent ยฃ100 a month on food and my other expenses were very limited. (Trusted Housesitters - www.trustedhousesitters.com - is the best of the house-sitting sites.) So yes, it can be done.

why start in one of the most expensive cities on the planet when you can go elsewhere and do the helpx thing in a place that costs a fraction and still build your business? are you legally authorized to work in the UK?

It would depend on your schedule because youโ€™d be prioritizing the hostelโ€™s needs and timing over your part-time job. Unless you only work your part-time job on weekends, in which case youโ€™ll be pretty much exhausted since you work 7 days a week, assuming youโ€™re going to continue working on your company after the 5 hours per day. Youโ€™re not even going to have much fun in London if youโ€™re working all the time.

The best route would be to work first wherever you are, save up, still work the hostel gig because 5 hours in exchange for accommodation is reasonable, but have some backup cash to tide you through so you can spend time working on your business instead of working part-time.

You donโ€™t have to be a digital nomad to set up your business. Donโ€™t fly until you can confidently afford it. Working your ass off and struggling to make ends meet in part-time jobs isnโ€™t going to be healthy for working on your business, which should be your number one priority.

Sure, itโ€™s possible and stressful, but how are you going to find the time and creativity to launch your startup while working two part-time jobs?

Hey hey,

I live in London. Hereโ€™s my expenses for a decent shared modern flat. I donโ€™t eat out often or drink too much.

Rent - ยฃ1040 (between me and my girlfriend. Includes bills and council tax.)
Travel - ยฃ150.80 for travel card.
Food: ยฃ200 for big shops. ยฃ100 for lunches and whatnot.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Finding a place in London for a month on the east side?

in London , United Kingdom by @autumnflame 7yr 7 years ago  | 5 comments

Iโ€™m planning to stay in London for about a month in August-September, to coincide with an industry workshop thatโ€™s happening there at the beginning of September, and would really love to find a spot in or near the Brick Lane/Whitechapel/Bethnal Green area. AirBnB seems pricy, but Iโ€™m unsure of how easy it is to get a place via SpareRoom.

Factors/Questions

  • Budget: hoping to stay under ยฃ700, willing to go up to ยฃ800 for a perfect place right near Brick Lane
  • Looking for a furnished private room in a flatshare; Iโ€™m pretty okay with a closet with a bed, so long as itโ€™s a clean, cozy closet.
  • Solo lady, so nowhere too dodgy. (My tolerance is about โ€œNew York at night in the hipster areasโ€-level. Mexico City in the historical district at night was a bit much for me.)
  • Anyone know how easy it is to get a space in SpareRoom without actually being in the city? Or am I better served getting a hostel for a few days and accommodation-hunting then? I worry about not finding a space if I put it off until Iโ€™m there, as evidenced by my thinking about this six months beforehand. :stuck_out_tongue:
  • On that note, is that a time around when it might be harder to find accommodation, like university term starting or something?
  • Is it easy enough to find a place from mid-month to mid-month, or is it mostly going to be whole months? (I guess this wouldnโ€™t be as much of a concern if itโ€™s a week-to-week.)
  • Is it easy to get a space without a local bank account? DNing and all. Cash wouldnโ€™t be an issue.
  • How is the cafe-working culture in London? Is free decent wifi and outlets a common thing in coffee shops? Iโ€™m not super-thrilled with the idea of coworking spaces; the prices feel a bit high for me, and I actually kinda like working with a bustle around me, so long as thereโ€™s power and internet. Iโ€™ll probably look into it if it turns out there arenโ€™t really a lot of cafes equipped to do that sort of thing though.
  • โ€ฆ are there any questions I should be asking or issues I should be considering?

I realize itโ€™s a lot of questions, but anything helps! Thanks!

Where is the best place to live in London for digital nomads?

in London , United Kingdom by @nicholasdnewell 7yr 7 years ago  | 35 comments

Iโ€™m moving to London for a year and would like to know where Iโ€™ll have the best โ€œaccessโ€ to other digital nomads as well as facilities such as coworking spaces. If possible (I know itโ€™s asking a lot for London), Iโ€™d prefer to live somewhere cheap (a relative term I know, but Iโ€™m looking to spend no more than ยฃ1,000), but still have the aforementioned items. Any help, guidance, or just simple insider advice would be much appreciated! Thank you =)

Anyone know of a room to rent in London from 24/09?

in London , United Kingdom by @zosiaswidlicka 8yr 8 years ago  | 0 comments

Hello, my boyfriend and I are looking for a room or flat to rent in London for a month starting 24th September. South East would be ideal but weโ€™re not too picky. AirBnB results are a bit uninspiring/pricey and Spare Room is full of rubbish so if any nomads are looking to fill their room weโ€™ll gladly sublet off you! Not looking to spend more than ยฃ900/month tops. Thanks!

How do you survive hanging out with a group of people that don't speak English well?

by @tylerf 9yr 9 years ago  | 6 comments

Iโ€™ve been living in countries where English isnโ€™t spoken that well among the population.

Most of the time I hang out 1-on-1 with a native that speaks good english.

And thatโ€™s because when Iโ€™m in a group where most people donโ€™t speak good English, itโ€™s painful and awkward.

You feel bad if everyone switches to English just because of you, but at the same time you feel totally left out if everyone speaks their native language which you donโ€™t understand much about.

Have you guys faced such situations before?
How did you handle it?
