Are internet speeds fast and reliable enough for digital nomads in Tulum?

Do any digital nomads here live and work from Tulum? Has anyone in the recent past?

I’ve been researching spending the fall in Tulum so I can work and also go to a great immersive Spanish school I found there. However, I recently started seeing a lot about internet connections being slow, going in and out if there is rain in Tulum, going down for a week at a time. On top of all that, I also heard that cellular connections are spotty there and that there isn’t 4G there yet. Airbnb hosts I contacted have said mixed things and the ones who were specific said that their internet connections were only 1mb up and 256k down…

Can anyone confirm or deny? Is Tulum’s infrastructure not quite ready for digital nomads?

The coworking space was dead last September - I tried to contact them but no reply.

I stayed in “Aldea Zama” - which is a new area between the maintown and the beach and had great wifi (20/8). There was a beach bar called Papaya Playa which had something like a 5/2 connection.

The rest was pretty shitty but it didnt bother me as I just worked from home. Cool place, way better than PDC.

I just sent Coworking Karma an email asking about their internet. I’m hoping to go there for about a month in Feb/March.

From their web presence, it does seem doubtful that they’re even still open.

EDIT: Just got an non-deliverable notification on the email. Looks like they’re MIA.

I’m in Tulum right now (November 2016). I would assume the worst if you’re staying on the beach. However, in town you can find a good connection on the main road. I’m at Campanella Cremerie and getting 30/down 10/up with a 6ms ping on their wifi.

There’s also 4G now with a Telcel sim. However, you have to be on the main road or very close to it. On the main road with my Telcel sim I’m getting 20/down, 20/up, 50ms ping, but I’ve been a few blocks away where I can’t get 4G or even decent 3G. So it’s really hard to say where you’ll get a good signal.

I wouldn’t count on getting a good connection on the beach, especially as you move further south. However, I’m sure you can find a good connection if you search for it. I had 4/down with the wifi at Diamante K the other day which was pretty good. Other spots I’ve tried on the beach were unusable.

Just so you know, a lot of the best beach spots/restaurants are deceivingly far from town, so I would make sure you consider that since the appeal of Tulum is the beach. IMO not the best place to learn Spanish either since the default is English in so many places.

FYI: I’ve only been here a few days so take it for what it’s worth.

I was in Tulum from Feb 2015 thru July 2015 and I can tell you that in my experience the internet speed & reliability were both horrible. I am led to believe that if you live right along the main highway that either cable or xDSL are available and relatively fast. Other than that, the infrastructure is lacking and where I lived, I had to resort to wimax which is extremely expensive (~100USD/month for 5mb down) which I could have made work if I actually got that speed, but rarely did. I experienced random dropouts lasting from hours to days. Indeed there is no 4G available and for the most part, 3G wasn’t very good either. Tulum also tends to be more expensive than many other places in Mexico - but my requirements for housing that is both spacious and comfortable probably contribute significantly to that.

Seconding what Lisa said. I was there in May and the internet was very slow, especially by the beach. It worked slightly better in town, but went out frequently.

It definitely wasn’t very fast (was there in January 2015). I don’t think you’ll be able to do a ton of work unless you are very patient. We definitely had a connection (stayed in town), but it just wasn’t very fast. That said, if you can do some of your work via telephone, you can get a SIM card from IUSACELL or whatever and call the US for free (some of the plans have unlimited US calling) and you should be able to get a connection for that easily.

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

Hi, I've got a question to anyone who had experience with the digital nomad lifestyle. I'm 24, I'm in my last year of university doing computer science, got 3 years of experience mostly doing web development.

I never liked the idea of staying in one place, getting a job and growing roots - hence the will to take the opportunity and travel the world. My main question is – how do I go about it? Are there any useful resources I could look into?

How do I go about insurance and such once I decide to move. I currently live in Switzerland and do freelance work for one company. It's not a lot, since my studies don't allow me to pick up a full time job, but it allows me to cover simple expenses.

I'd be happy to get some insight into how things work and also happy to network with anyone interested.

Does international health insurance for digital nomads exist?

I’m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. It should cover the basic services and at least be accepted in the EU (it’s ok if it’s not accepted in the US as I’m aware they rarely are). Nice to have: enter into a contract online. I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. That’s it.

I need some advice from you please!

Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?
What is a good way of achieving this goal?

How do digital nomads pay tax?

Hello everyone! I’m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesn’t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if you’re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your “original country” and then pay them?

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians don’t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But I’d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? I’ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Best place for Digital Nomad in Latin America?

Hi!

I am planning to move to Latin America for 3-4 months (Oct-January). I’ve narrowed down 6 different places that I want to visit before committing to settling down, but I’d love to get some community input.

Here are the cities I’m considering:

Quito, Ecuador
Cuenca, Ecuador
Medellin, Columbia
Cartagena, Columbia
Antigua, Guatemala
San Marcos La Laguna, Guatemala

The most important things I’m looking for:

Fast/easily accessible internet
Easy to meet other nomads/make friends in general
Safe for women
Some sort of spiritual community (I’m also a yoga teacher)
Easily walkable city

Anyone have any experience with these places and can give some insight? I’m also completely open to other recommendations.

I have been to several coworking spaces (Selina etc.) only to find A LOT of local Mexican workers and businesses. How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

There’s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But it’s all not very optimal.

I’ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I don’t want do physical stuff, so I’m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but I’m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me there’s a big risk of it getting “lost in the mail” if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

I’m wondering if there’s a service or community, where I can find a nomad who’s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I can’t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

Are there any nomads from India?

I have seen a lot of posts from different people across the world, but not even a single post from someone in India, who has been a nomad, either living within the country or traveling to another one.

Would definitely love to hear stories from such people. We are a couple traveling as social nomads who are trying to bridge the gap between the rural and urban societies in India. We have started out very humble and do not have much resources, so looking out for help from the community.
