Anybody around Europe over the next few months?

by @paulrose 8yr  | 9 comments

Hi All

Soโ€ฆ a few months ago when I was in Asia, for some reason I decided that it was gonna be too hot over the summer months and I wanted to mix it up with a few months touring Europe. So I had the idea to buy and RV and drive round for a few months.

Meet Teagan

Itโ€™s taken a few months going through the process of getting my license to drive the RV, because itโ€™s so large it wasnโ€™t covered on my standard driving license. Add to that, I had some solar panels fitted for unlimited power, and a massive satellite dish for internet wherever I go.

Iโ€™ve now got my ferry booked out of the UK for September 11th and at the moment have no plans past the first few weeks.

Has anyone on here done anything similar before? Any places recommended, or anyone around Europe over the next few months?

Iโ€™m doing about 3 months worth before heading to Vegas for NYE and around the states for a few months after that before back to Asia for a bit.

Itโ€™s been great. Coming to the end of the trip now. Only 9 days left until my ferry back to the UK. And I have to say, Iโ€™m quite looking forward to a breakโ€ฆ

A few thoughts on the tripโ€ฆ

France > Spain > Portugal > Spain > France > Italy > France. About 5,000 miles covered! Some amazing places visited. Great scenery, great cities, great people. That saidโ€ฆ

I definitely chose the wrong time of year to do this. My original plan was to spend the summer months in Europe, but the delay in the driving licence process pushed this way back. Itโ€™s not summer anymore.

Most places I visit are extremely quiet. You could either look at this as both an upside and downside. The places have been beautiful, but there are is a definite lack of people to talk to. Outside of the bigger cities, the language barrier is obvious. Iโ€™ve visit some of these places before in high season, and youโ€™re never short of a tourist or twenty. Itโ€™s massively arrogant of me to assume people should speak English, so a definite self improvement topic dig deeper into a new language or two.

Iโ€™m not one for the cold, and the weather has taken a pretty harsh turn in the past few weeks. Thankfully I have plenty of work to get on with at the moment, so Iโ€™m not too worried about the endless rainy days. The nights get a bit cold, so the heating is on quite a bit.

The effect of Brexit has been felt almost every day. Not from any of the Europeans, but things got more expensive day by day when you compare the exchange rate. Itโ€™s taken a bit of a turn since the US Election, so thereโ€™s at least one thing to thank the Donald for. Fuel is the biggest expense, and there is no standard for pricing. Some of it is just price gouging, itโ€™s ridiculous. Before I left, I set myself a goal of visiting a few countries. On a repeat trip, Iโ€™d cut the amount of time down massively and go at a much slower pace.

Itโ€™s something Iโ€™d do again, but it would be great to do it with someone. Itโ€™s not like regular nomadic trips where youโ€™re in the city, or around people to interact with. Youโ€™re limited to the places you can drive, and park up. Some places have been convenient with a short walk or hopping on public transport into the city, but some places are quite far out of the way. It makes it kind of isolated at times.

Now, Iโ€™m ready for a trip back home to spend Christmas with friends and family. Iโ€™m back in the UK on the 2nd of December. Then Iโ€™ve got a friends birthday trip to Vegas for New Years Eve followed by a road trip around California for a few weeks, as if I havenโ€™t done enough driving this year! After that, back to SEA for some much needed sun.

What was your strategy for parking your home, especially during the night? Did you use some shopping mall parking spaces, or something like that.

Hey Lena

Sureโ€ฆ not the cheapest, but Iโ€™m glad Iโ€™m doing it. Iโ€™ll be keeping the RV for quite some time, so a good investment. Plus I can always sell if I need to!

The RV itโ€™s self cost ยฃ12,800.
(a new tyre on the first drive because I had a flat on the motorway :weary: ยฃ150)
Insurance for the year: ยฃ1,200
Satellite Internet system: ยฃ3,500 + ยฃ700 for a yearly subscription. Chalking this up to a business asset/expense as being connected is essential to me working.
Solar panel, new leisure batteries, charging system: ยฃ800
Major service and install of the solar panel and sat system: ยฃ3,500. This was waaaay more than I thought it was going to be. Some major costs were: 6 new tyres, all new brakes, oil, filters, habitation service. And the installation of the electrics.
Other bits, like lightbulbs, kitchen equipment, etc: around ยฃ300-ยฃ400. I have reciepts for everything but havent added everything up.

In all, about ยฃ22,500. Quite a bit, and more than I initially expected to spend when I first had the idea. I was looking at something smaller, nothing more than ยฃ5,000. But the more and more I looked into things I wanted something a bit roomier and something I could make my own.

Some Iโ€™ve seen around the same size, condition, and age, come in over the 20k mark, so Iโ€™m still quite pleased with everything.

Tons extra I want to do. The interior is very early 2000โ€™s and Im not a fan. Some much needed modernisation is needed, but Iโ€™d figure I should drive it around first and get my first tour done before deciding what I want to change.

Less than a week to go now. This time next week Iโ€™ll be a few hundred miles deep into France, on the way to see my family in southern Spain!

Hi Paul,

That is so cool. I was thinking a few times that it might be nice to get an RV and go through the Europe, so it would be very interesting to find out how your journey went

That guy really went all out. Iโ€™d love to build one from scratch. Maybe in a few years. Iโ€™ve definitely got a taste for it.

I definitely love mixing it up a bit thoughโ€ฆ first part of the year was in Asia, second part of the year has been summer at home, the final part of the year will be driving round Europe. Next year is already looking pretty full with plenty of places to see

Anybody bring their car to Mexico instead of flying?

in Mexico by @digitaldiva 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Iโ€™m curious whether anyone drove to Mexico instead of flying and used their car down there. Iโ€™ve heard bad stories of people driving down there but not sure I believe them. How safe is it to drive through rural areas, and to park in cities? It would be cool to have the car to explore while there.

Has anyone created a list of co-living spaces around the world?

by @keegansard 4yr 4 years ago  | 4 comments

Iโ€™m a big believer in co-living but Iโ€™m finding hard to find all the options available in different cities.

I have found the major players like Roam, The Collective, and WeLive but havenโ€™t found many others.

Has anyone seen a list or should I start making one?

How to ship bikes from US to Europe?

by @ld 4yr 4 years ago  | 3 comments

Hello,
Iโ€™m preparing to travel again to Europe, but this time I want to bring our bikes. 2 road bikes. Iโ€™ll be traveling from USA to the Milan or Rome airport.

Iโ€™d appreciate hearing your thoughts, experience and tips on traveling with a bike. I plan on being fairly stationary with our location and staying in one spot for 2-3 months, then (hopefully train) to another spot for 3 months, etc. So itโ€™s the initial international flight Iโ€™m most concerned about. But realistically, I think a regional flight will be inevitable with the bikes, too.

I know a bike box will be huge and we will have to break down the bike, thankfully our bikes are fairly light weight. Iโ€™m expecting it to be a huge painโ€ฆbut I think the reward of having a good bike to roam around with will be invaluable. Especially since we will be staying in rural areas and donโ€™t want to rent a car.

General range of cost?

Anyone bring their bike and glad they did? โ€ฆWish they didnโ€™t?.. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks!

SIM to use in Eastern Europe

by @itinerantdev 5yr 5 years ago  | 6 comments

Over the next few weeks Iโ€™m visiting:

  • Prague 4 days
  • Bratislava 12 days
  • Berlin 7 days
  • Budapest 60 days

I am British and was assuming I would use my giff gaff sim as that has free EU roaming.

But I have been in Mexico for six weeks and giff gaff emailed and said if I didnโ€™t use my sim in the UK soon they would start charging their normal expensive roaming rates.

Soโ€ฆ Can anyone recommend a pre-pay data only sim/package I can use in all of these countries? Ideally which I can pick up in Prague?

What's the best warm destinations in Europe in the winter?

by @jammingsloth 5yr 5 years ago  | 33 comments

Planning ahead for the winter. Iโ€™ll be in Spain in the Fall and want to go someplace warm for the winter in or near Europe, but not Schengen. Was first thinking Cape Town, but the internet is slow and it is very far. Was also thinking:
Israel - but airbnb listings are very pricey.
Morocco?
Turkey - maybe a little chilly.

Any other suggestions?

Anybody recommend US health insurance with global coverage?

by @tylertringas 5yr 5 years ago  | 18 comments

Any US nomads found health insurance with global coverage? My current approach has been to have US health insurance, essentially a waste of money but if I ever got very sick I could go home and have coverage. My actual healthcare is a combination of travel insurance (havenโ€™t really used it much though) and paying cash in cheap places like SE Asia and Latin America. The cobbled together approach is neither simple nor very cost-effective. Love to find a product with global coverage that also satisfies Obamacare requirements. Any leads?

Advice on phone plans? 1 year in Europe

by @larsheather 5yr 5 years ago  | 8 comments

Weโ€™re Americans planning to be in Europe for all of 2020 - approx. 90 days in each country, and alternating Schengen and non-Schengen. Our destinations will likely include four of these: Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Ireland, Romania, and Spain.
Can anyone give us advice on cell phones? We would prefer to keep our current (U.S) numbers if at all possible. We donโ€™t anticipate making many local calls, but will phone the U.S. about once a week. Weโ€™ll use our phones for internet quite often.
Any advice for our situation would be very much appreciated!
Thanks,
Heather and Lars

Nomad in Europe and buying a car

by @toob 5yr 5 years ago  | 2 comments

Weโ€™re nomadโ€™ing around Europe, living in places for a few months at a time. It would be super convenient to own a car for this, but we havenโ€™t found a good option to buy and keep one without being a steady registered resident in any country. Every time we move weโ€™d have to basically change number plates et cetera.

Does anyone have any experience with this and has helpful advice?

Can anyone recommend a good Swedish bank for European student?

Whatโ€™s a good European call & SMS forwarding service?

by @adrienbetweets 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi all

What do you guys use for receiving both sms & calls on a European phone number?

Iโ€™d like to have a phone number that does not change for at least 1 or 2 years.

I did my homework & found this thread but itโ€™s only about US services so I donโ€™t think itโ€™s relevant: Whatโ€™s a good US call and SMS forwarding service?
Also, I looked into Google Hangout but it doesnโ€™t support European phone numbers.

Anybody with a software consultancy having issues finding clients while travelling?

by @raz 6yr 6 years ago  | 4 comments

I recently started running a software consultancy in the UK that specialises in MVP development and onboarding/marketing strategies. I found it relatively easy to get leads by attending networking events (quite a lot here in Edinburgh).

I plan to start travelling soon, though. Has anybody tried to travel while running a software consultancy? Iโ€™m really curious to find out how you handled finding new clients while doing that. Letโ€™s say that if I go networking somewhere in Asia I wonโ€™t find clients willing to spend much on a project (and canโ€™t just pay my employees less because I canโ€™t find good paying projects).

Best European Ski Towns?

Looking to spend around 6 weeks somewhere in Europe this winter skiing and working. Donโ€™t need a big tech community but care more about it being affordable and having at least half decent skiing.

Where is the best place to open a bank account in Europe?

by @julien 6yr 6 years ago  | 7 comments

Hello the community,

I am thinking about opening a business bank account in another country outside of France.
I live in Paris and I work as a freelancer. The taxes on my salary are very expensive (around 85%). I would like to know if there are better options for bank accounts within Europe.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Is anybody a Digital Nomad in the UK and not a resident?

by @creative_nomad_ 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

The situation is that my BF is a UK citizen and I am not. We are traveling around SEA and planning to stop in the UK for 6 months to rekindle funds. Granted, the UK is not the cheapest place to rekindle funds, however, he can work and get a good job there.

I have already done my working visa in the UK so I canโ€™t legally work there again. Iโ€™m a graphic designer and web designer and have decided that I will try and get freelance work to support myself whilst Iโ€™m over there.

My question is more related to tax and visas. I am an Australia citizen so I can get a 3 month tourist visa. Iโ€™m just a little worried about how strict they are over there on visas and questioning finance etc

Where to pay taxes if self employed non-resident of the UK, travelling Europe?

by @jadi4nd 6yr 6 years ago  | 5 comments

Hi, I know there are a few posts around this topic but none of them quite answer my questions.

I am British and currently a resident in the UK.
Next year I am going to become a non-resident and spend over a year traveling mostly around Europe, moving every few weeks never staying anywhere longer than a month. (My first venture into becoming a digital nomad!)

I am remote, self employed, software developer working mostly for one client based in the UK.

Where am I liable to pay taxes?
From what I have read I will not be liable to pay taxes in UK, can anyone confirm this?
If not the UK then where if I am moving every few weeks?
If possible I want to avoid starting a company as this seems unnecessarily complicated for my work setup.

Thank you in advance for any help

Which is the warmest city in Europe with the highest number of tech jobs?

by @omarmohameddev 6yr 6 years ago  | 8 comments

I am currently living in Cologne, Germany, with my wife, but we are looking for to continue our slow-nomadism path towards a warmer city, possibly close to the sea, where I can easily get a new job and offer a set of well-know, tech companies/startups. Any idea?

I was considering Madrid and Valencia, but also Nice looks very attempting even if I am scared that there are not enough tech companies could become hard find/change job in the long term.

Thanks everyone in advance!
