Any tips for nomad'ing from Tanzania to South Africa?

in South Africa by @tylertringas 9yr  | 3 comments

Hi nomads! Iโ€™m headed to Tanzania in mid-July and working my way down to Cape Town over about 2.5 months. Itโ€™s my first time in the region. Any tips or warnings for typical nomad concerns in Tanzania, Zambia, Botswana, Mozambique and South Africa?

Iโ€™m anticipating worse than usual wifi speed but any tips on connectivity would be great.

What are the best sites or strategies for accommodation? I usually use Airbnb, hostelworld or booking.com and target guesthouses in the $50/night or cheaper range. Is that realistic?

Most importantly what should we do?! Iโ€™ve already research the obvious highlights: Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, Zanzibar, Victoria Falls, etc. Any off the beaten path things to do and/or good spots to post up for a few weeks and enjoy/work?

Thanks

Hi Tyler,

I have just been back from 2 months nomading in Mozambique, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana. And I have resided 1.5 years in South Africa so I can share you some tips.

As you may expect it, the internet is not great there. In Mozambique, you can buy a SIM card from Vodacom and get 2GB for no more than USD10, cheap, and the connection in 3G is good. I had more ease working on 3G than on most Wi-Fi hotspots.

You can do the same in Tanzania with Airtel, but the quality of the network is quite poor.

I donโ€™t know about the 3G in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, but I found it hard to find Wi-Fi in most hotels.

In South Africa the connection is good and most places have Wi-Fi (at least compared to the countries above), the 3G is good but expensive.

I have been 2 weeks in Zanzibar and let me save you some troubles if you decide to travel around the island: withdraw as much money as you need in Stone Town, the capital city, because then there is no ATM on the whole island!

This region is fantastic, relatively unexplored as compared to many typical nomad Asian cities. The 2 main downsides of traveling there is the difficulty to find proper internet connection, and the relatively high prices of everything. Mozambique and Zanzibar are relatively expensive (especially the North of Mozambique, region of Pemba). Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana are surprisingly expensive. South Africa is cheaper and probably more suited to nomading.

Donโ€™t hesitate if you need more info, Iโ€™ll be happy to help.

Cheers, enjoy your nomading in this awesome part of the world!

Hi romandz! Seems like you have great knowledge of the region. My girlfriend and I are really anxious to spend a month in Africa during August. Weโ€™ve been heavily researching Cape Town but she has reservations about the safety of the city. Weโ€™re open to most countries in Africa but safety and internet are our top priorities. Prior to spending August in Africa, weโ€™ll be on Reunion for 2 months. Can you share any advice about Cape Town to ease her concerns or countries in Africa you prefer instead? Any help would be awesome!

@jalex 9yr

Hi there, not a nomad just a lurker on the forums so donโ€™t really have any nomadic specific tips, but Iโ€™m currently in Zambia for a couple of months and have visited some of the countries in the region on earlier occasions.

Eastern and Southern Africa is a fantastic part of the world, so youโ€™re going to have a great time. $50/night should be enough to get some decent accomodation, but you might have to shop around and donโ€™t expect too much. Tanzania, Zambia and Botswana donโ€™t cater to individual travelleres and backpackers the same way many Asian and South American countries do. Hostels are quite rare since the tourist industry caters mostly people on all-inclusive safaris. Donโ€™t know about Mozambique and South Africa though.

In Zambia internet connection is not exactly great, usually it only qualifies as acceptable. If youโ€™re staying in better hotels or lodges youโ€™ll probably be looking at 10 Mbit/s at best. Iโ€™d recommend getting a local SIM and just accept the fact that youโ€™ll have to pay for reliable internet. Thereโ€™s three operators in Zambia: Airtel, MTN and Zamtel. Iโ€™m using MTN which is supposedly the best of the bunch. Data packages cost about 200 ZMK for 2GB, 300 for 3GB and 800 for 10GB. Valid for 30 days. Airtel should be avoided since they charge extra for access to WhatsApp, Facebook and Twitter. In my experience, Livingstone has better mobile internet speeds than Lusaka, regularly got about 20 Mbit/s in Livingstone while in Lusaka Iโ€™m rarely above 2 Mbit/s.
If youโ€™re planning on visiting Lusaka, the best internet is found at The Deli, a great cafรฉ with good coffee and fantastic food.

A word of warning though, thereโ€™s load shedding going on in all of Zambia for the indeterminate future. Appearently the rainy season wasnโ€™t as rainy as it usually is, so water levels are low and power generation cannot keep up with demand. Expect power outages on an irregular basis, lasting for up to 8 hours at a time. If thatโ€™s a dealbreaker for you, Iโ€™d suggest skipping most of Zambia (except Victoria Falls) and instead consider Namibia, which will be a great contrast to the other countries.

What features would you like to see on Nomad List?

by @levelsio 3yr 3 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi everyone,

I would love to hear what you'd like me to build next on Nomad List, or any other product/feature feedback ideas you have.

It's been 6+ years now but I'm in this for the long term and with the boost remote work got last year it's even more exciting to work on Nomad List than ever.

Current roadmap is here: twitter.com/levelsio/status/1363204985488572417?s=20 and pbs.twimg.com/media/EusS9PKXEAUR8xp?format=jpg&name=4096x4096

The next products/features I have planned:

- ๐Ÿ›‚ Rebase: visa, residency and immigration services for remote workers

- ๐ŸŽ“Courses: learn the steps how to go remote and travel/relocate

- ๐Ÿ› Gov liaison: diplomacy services to the governments to help us lobby for nomads and for them to attract remote workers

Thanks a lot!

List of Visa/Residency Information in Table/Spreadsheet format?

by @innovatelife 3yr 3 years ago  | 2 comments

As part of signing up for this website I was hoping I would come across a list of Visa and/or Residency requirements by country ideally in a table format to assist with decision making. Does anybody recommend any other websites that might present the information in this format (or Google Spreadsheet)?

Most Walkable Neighborhood / City In The World ?

by @dannybooboo 3yr 3 years ago  | 1 comment

I love living in walkable areas of town. I can always find them. But now I'm wondering where in the world are the most walkable places? I'm imagining walk streets (no cars), zoning allowing both business and residential, parks or beaches ,etc.

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of?

in Germany by @clara 3yr 3 years ago  | 0 comments

Hi everybody. I live and work in Germany and want to go to Canary Islands for 6 months to work from there. I'm going to keep my current job, just change the "home" in the home office part of things. Are there any tax issues I have to be aware of? I was reading about becoming a residence after 183 days, thus having to pay taxes there plus my employer having to register there. Does anybody know how it works exactly? Thanks a lot!

Anyone have tips for preventing or getting over jet lag? ๐Ÿ˜“๐Ÿ˜ดโœˆ๏ธ

by @artofbryce 5yr 5 years ago  | 10 comments

We just finished our first stint around South East Asia and somehow survived 3 days of way too many flights, leaving me to feel like death.

Too much shitty airplane food, not enough sleep, big time difference from Mexico to SEA.

Anyone have tips to prevent that more in the future (aside from better flight plans)? More importantly, how do I recover faster from this horror?

What's the best bank for South African digital nomads?

in South Africa by @kirst85 6yr 6 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m a South African about to become a Nomad next year. I will still be employed by a South African company and receive a salary into my FNB bank account monthly.

I will be mostly based in Serbia but plan on travelling a lot. Does anyone have any advice on the best bank account to have? Is there a way to not get charged a small fortune in ATM charges and avoid getting my account frozen for using it in lots of countries?

Iโ€™m unsure of the best way to handle things. Should I try get another bank account outside of SA (Can I even do that)? I also have a British Passport if that makes a difference.

If any of you have any experienced advice I would be very grateful, Thanks in advance!

Living in Dubai for a month. Tips?

in Dubai , United Arab Emirates by @cyrilgupta 6yr 6 years ago  | 2 comments

Heya!
I have to be in Dubai by end of the month to finish the formation of my company and residency etc. Iโ€™ve stayed at hotels earlier, but that sounds pretty impractical considering I will be living there nearly for a month.

Anyone got any tips about renting a short-stay apartment for a month? Maybe even a few leads?

What about living in Dubai? I will be working hard, but I donโ€™t want to be bored out of my mind. Places I can hang out, things I can do?

Please share

What Are The Safest Neighborhoods To Live in Cape Town?

in Cape Town , South Africa by @justinbosco 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hi all! My girlfriend and I would like to spend a month in Cape Town in August and are researching the safest neighborhoods to live in. Weโ€™d like to get an Airbnb but weโ€™re curious if anyone has any advice on where we should be looking? Weโ€™ve read a lot about Cape Town in our research, both good and bad. Any tips from people who have experience living in the city beyond a weekend resort stay would be great!

Any recommendation on accommodations in Cape Town?

in Cape Town , South Africa by @danielletom 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Hey guys,

Iโ€™m looking at heading to Cape Town in February/March. I am looking for a long term accomodation for about three months. I checked out GumTree and StayinCapeTown, but I was wondering if you had any more reccomendations on where to look! Airbnb is quite expensive and sparse.

Also, I would love to know your favourite areas in the city and hear about your experiences

Thanks !

Looking for a place to hibernate and surf in Jan/Feb/March - any tips?

by @tvr3000 7yr 7 years ago  | 14 comments

Hi all,

For Jan through March Iโ€™m looking for a place that as a) friendly people, b) warm climate, c) surfing, and d) reliable internet (either in cafes or a coworking space).

So far, this is my short list:

  • Canggu, Bali (already was there last year, but too busy with work then)
  • Phillippines (I donโ€™t know where yet, but Iโ€™ve read Baler might be nice)
  • Mexico (but havenโ€™t yet researched)
  • Nicaragua (but havenโ€™t yet researched)

If anyone has some good info on this, please share! : )

How is the internet in West/Central Africa?

by @wordmonkey 8yr 8 years ago  | 6 comments

Soโ€ฆ common sense says that the best places to work are those with good, fast, stable WiFi connections. At the same time, the thing I like best about my location independence is the ability to spend long stretches of time in places I wouldnโ€™t normally get to spend much time in. So Iโ€™m determined to make West and Central Africa happen in 2017, specifically Benin, Togo, Senegal, Cote dโ€™Ivoire, Gabon, Rwanda and Congo-Brazzaville. (And a month off in the DRC, but the latter will just be an offline holiday.)

If anyone has any experience with the reliability of the Internet in the region and the availability of data SIM cards in any of the countries Iโ€™ve mentioned, Iโ€™d be super grateful about insights, tipps and heads-ups, AirBnB recommendations, et cetera. I know itโ€™s not going to be a fast, luxurious, spotless connection for most of the time, and thatโ€™s fine, I just need it to be mostly reliable, speed is secondary.

Thanks
