Any nomads up for skiing and a co-living experiment in Canada?

in Canada by @vladepap 8yr  | 31 comments

Hi guys,
Iโ€™ve been traveling for awhile now and lately Iโ€™ve been dreaming of heading back to Canada for the 2016/17 winter season (Dec-Mar?). Namely of spending a ski season in Nelson, BC, a mountain town I lived in a few years ago.

Nelson, BC is known for the most amazing powder. The small resort at Whitewater is very accessible (about 20 minutes outside of town) and in close proximity to slack and backcountry skiing. Nelson is also located near the Powder Highway and is accessible to a lot of other well known powder spots.

Have you ever dreamed of being a โ€œski bumโ€ for a season? Of skiing in the morning and working in the afternoon? Of attempting a co living experiment with other working, professional type nomads who share your passion and lifestyle?

What I know about co living I have learned from research around co working and it seems like the next logical step (to me). Have you heard of 20Mission in San Francisco? Or one of the other co living proposals in this forum? The experiment part is to see who would commit and what amazing projects and ideas might come out of such a space. In my experience, when I travel, there is something missing out of the places I stay. Either I get lonely or distracted by holiday makers and other travellers. I sometimes struggle to find a work space where I feel productive as well as engaged and would like to explore this as a solution. Work AND ski everyday? Be creative and productive where I live? Sounds pretty close to living the dream to me.

Some extras about Nelson:
Think white winter. Silence, snow covered trees and streets. Fireplace.
There are hot springs close by.
This is no ordinary small town, thereโ€™s a very diverse population.
This town is an organic, clean living mecca, or the opposite if thatโ€™s what you seek.
There are many opportunities to engage in the community, be it volunteering, participating in clubs or groups.

Thinking about it, I would put down three requirements;
Desire to ski
Working nomad
Long(ish) term stay (eg: a month?)

The idea is to rent a house with a group of committed individuals and see what happens. Will a type of community be fostered and emerge? How can we co-create it?

If I have piqued your interested and you want to join me, learn more or keep in touch, let me know. This post is meant to give me an idea of whether there is any interest in this idea.

This is such a great idea!!! Unfortunately I already have plans to travel around Europe this winter.

I see collaboration among digital nomads like this as a growing trend and Iโ€™ve started work on a tool to help people decide on a place in scenarios like this. Would love to get your feedback if this can help as you get closer to deciding on the details:

It makes it easier to discuss the different options and places of interest in Nelson. If there is anything that doesnโ€™t work too well or there is some feature you would like me to add, Iโ€™m all ears

Iโ€™m pretty interested in thisโ€ฆ likely for February and/or March. Iโ€™m 50% committed to the idea at this stage but donโ€™t want to commit fully until I have some idea of pricing. Iโ€™ll be coming from Australia so it will add up quickly once I include flights. Let me know as soon as you have an idea of accom prices so I can work out a budget of sorts and then HOPEFULLY commit properly. Exciting!

Hey,
Yep, Iโ€™m looking for a place to rent beginning in Dec. There is a lot more up online now, eg;

Any help looking would be appreciated, I figure weโ€™re good with a 3-4 bedroom, if I can fill the rooms every month.

Iโ€™m still excited about it, just fyi! Also, anxious to see whenever get a feel for price estimates. After getting excited about this, Iโ€™ve been looking into Sarajevo skiing etc. (Iโ€™m really bad at skiing, so the quality of the place probably doesnโ€™t make a huge difference).

Also, just wanted to say I really appreciate you organizing all this stuff! Itโ€™s awesome to do, and inspiring met o think of potential nomad things to organize in the future.

Iโ€™m afraid Iโ€™m wonโ€™t be able to make it, after all, as canโ€™t take much time off work early next year, and Canadaโ€™s time zone makes it pretty impossible for me to work at any reasonable hourโ€ฆ  I hope this works out well and will be repeated at some point when Iโ€™m freer, or in a different time zone! I actually grew up in nelson. Amazing little town, iโ€™m sure you guys will have a great time. If youโ€™re looking for a place, search for something in the rosemont area. A little more affordable and only a 3-4 minute drive to downtown. The north shore can also be quite affordable although a vehicle will be necessary as it is a little more out of the way.

Thanks for the tips! I lived there for a couple of years only, and my friends who still live there tell me that AirBnB is killing the winter season rentals. Iโ€™ve been having some trouble finding a place, but defo looking in Rosemont, north shore, even rossland & revy . This winter is supposed to be epic! If you have any leads, let me know!

Hey man, iโ€™m afraid that I donโ€™t have any direct leads. Itโ€™s been a number of years since iโ€™ve been there. However, I can recommend that you consider direct rentals. Many places will state that they are only looking for a 1 year lease, but this is not set in stone. A huge number of people travel there for the winter ski season.

What iโ€™d so is just message them, explain that youโ€™re looking for a place for a few months, and offer them 20% above their asking price and maybe offer to hire cleaners or something that will reduce their expenses when you move out. Iโ€™m sure somebody will agree, it happens all the time.

I think for a lot of landlords, the party scene is the biggest issue. Nelson is home to one of the best electronic music festivals in Canada and there is a big party / drug scene. If you explain that most members of the house work remotely and need a quiet, respectful place to do their job that will give you a huge edge iโ€™d imagine.

Great! Yes, the spreadsheet is meant to be how to organize who is interested. It hasnโ€™t had much success in getting people to express interest. There has been interest here, but would need some way to show commitment, eg: a deposit.

Time for step two.
I think the easiest way to organize this is for everyone to put the dates they want into the spreadsheet.

Iโ€™ve organized it into months since in Canada rentals always start from the first of the month.
For planning, it will be easier to commit to the months you want. We can figure out out extra time (maybe you want to stay an extra couple of weeks in March, and you have committed to February) depending on who wants what dates as we get closer to the season.

I will start to look for housing in September (thatโ€™s when the winter rentals typically come on the market) so we have a second to populate this calendar.

As ever, if you have questions, want to get in on this, or have a better idea, reply to this post!

Any nomads in Arizona, US?

in Netherlands by @info132 3yr 3 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi guys,

After the Netherlands, the Bay Area, Colorado and being on the van life for 8 months, I am now in Sedona, AZ with a few other digital nomads. We are sharing a home here and are wondering if there are more like minded people in the area.

We do a bunch of hikes and campouts in the northern of Arizona. If you would like to connect with us, please do so :)

Tax advisor for permanent nomads?

by @eljaques 4yr 4 years ago  | 1 comment

I'm in need of a tax advisor who understands "our" typical situation. I'm all good on being legal on taxes at this point, but as I'm doing more investing and there's more compliance and KYC and such, it's getting more complicated to deal with this topic. Not living in my country of citizenship, company in another country, resident in yet another country, banking in a different country ... you know how it is, a pile of red flags.

Would be great to find a good tax advisor to sort things in a way that makes my situation as "explainable" and easily dealt with as possible. Any leads?

Do you prefer co-living spaces or hostels or Airbnbs?

by @davda1546 4yr 4 years ago  | 5 comments

We are hoping to become nomads soon and have booked an AirBnB in September in Goa for our first destination. We are considering what would be the best option for accommodation after that. We are trying to decide between co-living spaces, hostels, or Airbnbs.

What are your experiences of accommodation in terms of the following: reliable wifi, social aspect, pricing, cleanliness, cooking facilities?

Hey Nomads!

Iโ€™m looking for an international health insurance (no travel insurance) for my nomadic life. How do digital nomads pay tax?

by @rodriigovieira 4yr 4 years ago  | 19 comments

Hello everyone! Iโ€™m new here and probably this is a very newbie question, but it doesnโ€™t leave my head.

How do you, nomads, pay your taxes? I mean, if youโ€™re constantly traveling, how are you going to pay taxes for a certain country if you are going to stay there a short period of time?
Or do you return to your โ€œoriginal countryโ€ and then pay them?

By the way, this forum has very nice cool formatting features!

Anyone know an accountant for Canadian nomads/expats?

by @noam_lightstone 4yr 4 years ago  | 16 comments

Hey guys, this was my first year as a Canadian nomad.

As far as I know of, Canadians donโ€™t pay taxes if they do not live in the country for 6 months.

But Iโ€™d like to talk to an accountant or someone who does Canadian taxes specifically for expats and nomads to get clear on the rules and for help on my return coming up.

Does anyone know someone who specializes in Canada who can help? Iโ€™ve seen plenty of US recommendations but none for us canucks.

Thanks guys!

How do we solve housing for digital nomads?

by @levelsio 4yr 4 years ago  | 61 comments

Thereโ€™s been a lot of discussion on this recently.

Nomads usually stay in hostels, hotels and short-term apartments. But itโ€™s all not very optimal.

Iโ€™ve heard people suggest getting funding and building a network of houses you can stay at for a subscription price (e.g. Bruno Haid is working on that).

I donโ€™t want do physical stuff, so Iโ€™m thinking of building a platform around making housing better for nomads.

What are the housing problems nomads face? And how can we solve them with products/services?

App/tool/service for nomads to bring things from another country?

by @brmolin 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

I vaguely remember hearing about such a service before, but Iโ€™m drawing a blank on the name. Basically I left my tablet on a connecting flight in Europe, right before my main flight to Thailand. They have my tablet and are willing to ship it out for me, but people have warned me thereโ€™s a big risk of it getting โ€œlost in the mailโ€ if I ship something expensive like that to Thailand.

Iโ€™m wondering if thereโ€™s a service or community, where I can find a nomad whoโ€™s in Europe/heading to Thailand soon, so I can have it shipped to them in Europe and pay them to ferry it down here for me? I met someone in Budapest a ways back who had built something for this type of use-case, but I canโ€™t remember the name of it. Any help would be appreciated!

I have seen a lot of posts from different people across the world, but not even a single post from someone in India, who has been a nomad, either living within the country or traveling to another one.

Would definitely love to hear stories from such people. We are a couple traveling as social nomads who are trying to bridge the gap between the rural and urban societies in India. We have started out very humble and do not have much resources, so looking out for help from the community.

Best way to connect with "local" nomads using Nomadlist?

by @migueltic 5yr 5 years ago  | 4 comments

Hi, Iโ€™ve seen that Nomad List offers different options that could work for connecting with other nomads that are in the same place as me (forum, Slack, user maps, matches and maybe even more options I havenโ€™t seen), but Iโ€™m not sure what is the best/recommended way to use all these options.

Should I use all of them? Start with a message in the forum and/or Slack?

Sending private messages to a lot of people feels a little bit โ€œaggressiveโ€. And matches are not based on current location if I understood it correctly.

By the way, I just arrived at Budapest

Best American phone carrier for nomads

by @tylertringas 5yr 5 years ago  | 12 comments

Iโ€™m surprised this isnโ€™t anywhere on the forum yet. But just a pro tip for Americans about to start a nomad adventure. T-mobile offers unlimited SMS & data in 120 countries for FREE with any of their (already pretty cheap) plans. Itโ€™s ideal if you plan to be back in the US for any part of the year, but I honestly would consider it even if youโ€™re going to be entirely out of the country.

You get bumped down to much slower 3G speeds, but itโ€™s free and works as soon as you land. Can be super helpful before youโ€™ve sorted yourself out with a local SIM. I usually keep my T-mobile SIM in my iPhone all the time and then buy a local SIM and drop it in my pocket wifi for both laptop and iPhone when needed. I keep my local US number and just use it (itโ€™s like $0.05/min in most places) for important clients calls so they donโ€™t have to bother with Skype.

Iโ€™m not affiliated at all, just a happy customer. Anybody found a better deal worth mentioning?
