We're starting a coworking and coliving space in India. Can you help us validate it?

in India by @anugrah_sharma 9yr  | 12 comments

We are starting a co-working and co-living space (something like hubud) in Dharamshala, India; I would like to ask couple of questions to validate the concept:-

  1. Would you consider living in India for a while?

  2. We will be charging around 500 USD, which will cover everything including food, laundry, basic bed room and a beautiful working space. How willing are you to pay this amount?

  3. Have any advice for us? Do share.

Hi,
Iโ€™m currently living on Koh Lanta where there is a co-working space with dedicated apartments close-by.
They offer different levels of package : co-work only/ co-work + apartment + 2 meals a day. In addition they organise communal lunches and day drips to other small islands/ evening barbecues etc.
This number of options is really good as it means that you can choose what level of involvment you want.
I live offsite and go to the co-working space around 2 weeks per month and go to events when I feel like it.
Overall I recommend this kind of thing as an easy way to slot into a place and a community without having to sign-up to too much obligation. If I had taken the all inclusive package I think I would have been suffocated by not being able to get some space from others when needed. Different people have different priorities and level of professional commitment, so these options are really good for that.

Their site is pretty good and gives a good reflection of what is going on there:

I would definitely be interested in something similar India. It seems to be really underserved as a destination for nomads.

A co-working/co-living space in Dharamshala sounds awesome. Iโ€™d have to say I agree with @Dave_Chakrabarti regarding food. It becomes a liability and adds more work for you. 500 USD is pretty high for India, will the rooms be shared or dedicated?

Are there fast internet connections available in Dharamshala? Whatโ€™s the maximum speed?

@Anugrah: Post our call earlier this week, hijacking this thread to seek validation -

Co-living
Founderโ€™s Paradise โ€” a proposed co-living space in Koramangala, Bengaluru, India.

What if you never had to end your conversation because you have to go home?
What if you had a second chance at living a dorm life with amazing housemates?
What if you found a home in a city you have just landed in?

Accelerate your growth. Understand a city faster. Bond with people, not just exchange business cards.

Help us validate this concept:

  1. Will you be willing to pay around USD 400/ INR 25,000 per month and share the room with one more person? If you are a female, youโ€™ll get a female room mate.
  2. This would include all amenities: high-speed Internet connection, fully stocked kitchen, purified drinking water, basic furnishings โ€” beds and mattresses, wardrobes, geyser, fridge, TV, washing machine.
  3. Bonus: A library with books on startups & entrepreneurs + board games + weekly dinners + weekly film screenings/ guest talks.
  4. Duration of stay can be anywhere from 2โ€“6 months.

Hey Anugrah,

This is awesome. I am digital nomads travelling in India since past 6 months, currently in Bangalore, will be Goa for some time and was considering Dharmshala after it, by mid-April or so.

Would love to know if your place is ready, or if you can recommend me something.

Cheers! // @Anugrah_Sharma

Hey Anuragh that sounds very interesting to me. To answer your queriesโ€ฆ

  1. Yes absolutely! India has a lot to offer but I think what is most important is access to culture while maintaining a clean, beautiful, and safe working/living space.

  2. As mentioned earlier, this depends on what is being offered as well as the accommodations. Generally speaking, it is within the budget for most of us nomads.

  3. Website! Pictures and info (of the digs, the setting, and yourselves)! Mailing list!

Looking forward

Hey! Iโ€™ve been a semi-nomad (Chicago, Calcutta) these last few years, and have worked from random hotels in Dharamsala a couple of times.

That price could be high, could be low, or could be perfect; itโ€™d depend on how nice and rooms and facilities are. If youโ€™ve got some stunning photos of a unique workspace (bean bags, standing desks, people traveling with their dogs?) โ€ฆstuff you wouldnโ€™t normally see in a hotel, you could sell at that price.

Iโ€™m divided on including food. Dharamsala has amazing food available, and it tends to be pretty reasonable. Food is a very important part of travel for me, so Iโ€™d usually prefer to be on my own for food, so I can walk around and explore places Iโ€™d like. On the other hand, some nomads might prefer more of an all-included experience, for the convenience.

Your challenge will be differentiation. Dharamsala is full of cheap (and expensive) backpacker hangouts, coffee shops, wifi, and great food. Whatโ€™s the difference in experience between a reasonable room + meals / coffee / workspace at a coffee shop vs. a coworking space?

Keep us updated on your plans. Iโ€™m very interested in this myself.

Dave.

To be honest, I am very new to coworking and coliving spaces, so I am not exactly sure. However, Iโ€™ve been randomly travelling for a few years now, and from a travellerโ€™s perspective, I can say that I enjoy smaller places and โ€œtighterโ€ groups of people much more. I guess it makes the whole atmosphere feel much more homely to me that way.

Hope this helps.

  2. Is this per month or per week?
  3. Put up a website with more information (especially location!) and start building an email list of people that are interested. Once you have enough people interested get prebooking and start!

Video chat coworking solutions?

in Brazil by @essentiallyint 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

I am new to working out of coworking spaces. My business entails a lot of video conferences. I haven't chosen a specific coworking space yet but generally, what are the potential solutions for this? I have a microphone and headphones but still fell like it may be inconsiderate to take the calls anywhere in the coworking space. For a solo person, what are some general solutions? Are there usually options to rent a private room by the hour with just enough room to set up my microphone and laptop? Sidenote: any coworking space recommendations in Florianapolis, Brazil would also be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I dream of being a digital nomad? How do I do it?

by @programmingmark 4yr 4 years ago  | 2 comments

Hello digital nomad!

I dream of being an independent digital nomad. But it feels very elusive & unattainable with my success rate. In full disclosure, whilst I have dreamed about making money online since high school; I have not earned a single cent making money online. $0, nada, zilch!! On the contrary, I have spent a lot of time & money on books, podcasts. Even though I have spent a lot of time reading/listening to others, I do not have anything to show for it!

I have made attempts in the past to start an online business, but these fizzle out quite quickly when I do not see traction especially when the goal I have set myself is too high.

Instead of reaching for the ultimate nomadic lifestyle goal, I want to start much smaller. Really small! I am simply looking to make $50 profit per month from a new online business. Thatโ€™s it.

I need some advice from you please!

  • Is $50 profit too low? How long did it take you to earn $50 profit per month?

  • What is a good way of achieving this goal?

Thanks
Mark

Foreigner owned Coworking business in Malaysia

in Malaysia by @newyam 5yr 5 years ago  | 0 comments

Heyo folks! The idea to open up an own coworking space in Malaysia has been on my mind for quite a while and I would like to reach out on foreigners being a business owner/co working space owner in Malaysia, there are a lot of questions that would follow up but most importantly is to reach out to someone with experience.

Ideally would be someone who runs a coworking space in Malaysia, second best would be to just come in touch with a foreign business owner in Malaysia.
Cheers

Best coworking space in Medellin?

in Medellรญn , Colombia by @adele 6yr 6 years ago  | 6 comments

Hi there,

Iโ€™m considering a month or two in Medellin and wondered what the co-working space options are like. I want something more than a cafe, so happy to pay the going rate. I spent a couple of months at Hubud in Bali earlier this year and loved it, but realise that Iโ€™ve set the bar pretty high.

Has anyone used Epicenter? I read somewhere it is pretty busy. Any other options?

Suggestions much appreciated.

Which coworking spaces are open 24/7?

by @yako 6yr 6 years ago  | 13 comments

Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere around the world? Sometimes because of my line of work I need to be awake when everyone is sleeping on the country I am in (but I know I am not the only one!). It would be amazing to share that time at a coworking space with others who like to work at night or who have to be awake. Does anyone know of any coworking space open 24hs somewhere in the world?

I've got where 8 days to get from Tallinn to London - where should I visit?

in Tallinn , Estonia by @kaizenpreneur 7yr 7 years ago  | 3 comments

Iโ€™m heading to Tallinn next month to pick up my e-residency. Iโ€™ve built some time into my schedule, giving me 8 days or so to get from Tallinn to London for a meeting.

Looking for ideas on what route to take / places to visit or if there any good DN locations on-route.

One of my current ideas is to travel to Stockholm and take the train down to Copenhagen and then potentially the train down to Hamburg before train/fly to London.

But Iโ€™m open to suggestions and happy to fly or train it.

Thanks in advanceโ€ฆ

Bring external monitor to SE asia and avoid coworking cost?

by @anderkd 7yr 7 years ago  | 13 comments

Would it be advisable or wacky to lug an external monitor from the US in hopes of avoiding coworking costs by working from Airbnb with decent wifi? Iโ€™m not sold on coworking spaces, and like the solitude of coding away in my own little airbnb space. One screen is limiting to productivity, hence the love of an external monitor. Thoughts?
